HBO Max has revealed the trailer for an R-Rated live action movie adaptation of the ‘Mortal Kombat’ videogame franchise. The film will release on April 16 in theatres as well as on the streamer.
The plot of the film revolves around an MMA fighter, Cole Young, who is alien about his heritage and is haunted by Outworld’s emperor for reasons unknown.
He finds refuge under the thunder God, Raiden, and stands alongside Earthrealm’s greatest champions in a battle against Outworld’s forces, which may finally divulge answers about his past.
Aside from Raiden, the trailer features a colossal amount of fan favourite characters from the games including Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Jax Briggs, Sonya Blade, Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Mileena, Kano, and Goro. The character of Cole Young, however, is a film original and does not appear in the videogames.
The narrative and action too seem to be faithful to the source material with accurate costumes, gory action, and clean visual effects.

The fantasy fighting videogame was first developed in 1992 by Ed Boon and John Tobias, paving a a path for over 20 sequels with the latest — Mortal Kombat 11 — which was released in 2019.
The series has been previously made into two films namely, ‘Mortal Kombat’ (1995) and a sequel ‘Mortal Kombat: Annihilation’ (1997). The first film was received well by audiences but the second one failed to impress and was a major box office disaster.
Ever since Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the franchise from Midway Games in 2009, a reboot was on the cards. The company announced in 2019 that a script had been finalised and the project went into pre-production the same year. The makers have confirmed that the film will be R-Rated and finally feature the game’s gory fatalities.
