Modern Love: Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel, Tina Fey to star in anthology series

Amazon Prime’s new romantic anthology series Modern Love, based on the famous New York Times column of the same name, is set to premiere on October 18.

The Modern Love trailer premiered during Amazon Prime’s Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday, with Hathaway and the rest of the cast on hand as a panel to discuss the anthology.

The series will have eight episodes, based on stories that were chosen out by Daniel Jones, the editor of the column and consulting producer of the series, out of 750 columns in the newspaper’s archive.

Choosing the eight stories for the first season came down to Jones, director John Carney and Amazon executives picking favourites, then figuring out which ones “had enough in them to really move a narrative forward” in each half-hour episode.

All eight essayists were compensated for their stories, producers noted, and in some cases, were involved in the development of their respective episodes.

Anne Hathaway, who appeared on the TCA panel alongside Jones and series co-stars Cristin Milioti and Gary Carr, said that her story revolves around the Terri Cheney column, about a woman with bipolar disorder who is learning how to find love.

Asked at TCA about how romantic comedies have transferred from the big screen to the small, Hathaway said: “It clearly means there’s still an audience for them”.

“People have figured out these more intimate stories are worth staying at home. I’m grateful they’re not extinct,” said the Les Miserables Oscar winner.

The stellar cast includes Dev Patel, Tina Fey, Sofia Boutella, Olivia Cooke, Brandon Victor Dixon, John Gallagher Jr, Andy Garcia, Julia Garner, Catherine Keener, Andrew Scott, and John Slattery and Shea Whigham. Modern Love is produced by Amazon Studios, Storied Media Group and The New York Times.
