Marvel Studios announces phase 4 slate for Disney+

Marvel Studios recently announced 5 new shows for the Disney+ streaming service as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s phase 4 slate. The announcement comes from Walt Disney Company’s 2020 Investor Day Presentation.

These new shows include “Secret Invasion”, “Armor Wars”, “Ironheart” and two “Guardians of the Galaxy” series.

One of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” web series will premiere as the ‘first live-action Christmas Special’. The “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special”, written and directed by James Gunn, will be shot during the production of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, and will hit Disney Plus during the 2022 holiday season.

The second show from the lot will be called “I Am Groot” that will contain a series of shorts featuring the beloved tree with new characters from around the Marvel Universe.

“Secret Invasion” will star Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, who first met in “Captain Marvel”.

“Ironheart” will see Dominique Thorne play Riri Williams — a young girl who reverse engineers Tony Stark’s armour to become the protector of her neighbourhood.

Finally, “Armor Wars” will follow Don Cheadle as War Machine and tackle Tony Stark’s worst fear — his tech falling into the wrong hands.

Furthermore, the studio also provided more information for two previously announced web series, “Hawkeye”, “Moon Knight”, and “She-Hulk”.

During the conference, Marvel president Kevin Feige confirmed that Hailee Steinfeld will star as Kate Bishop alongside Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton for the “Hawkeye” web series.

It was also revealed that the “Moon Knight” show will revolve around a vigilante, Marc Spencer, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. These personalities inside him will be highlighted in depth against an Egyptian backdrop.

She-Hulk will finally make her way into the live action universe with the new series which, according to the studio, will be a comedy. It will star Tatiana Maslany as the titular character who is a cousin to Bruce Banner. It will also feature Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth as The Hulk and The Abomination respectively.

The surprises did not end there as the initially announced Disney+ series are close to release, got new trailers and teasers. These include “WandaVision”, “Loki”, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, “What If…”, and “Ms. Marvel”.

The first in line is the “WandaVision” series which is set to premiere on January 15. With a brand new trailer that further befuddles, there is no conclusive evidence as to what is gong on. It focuses on Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Wanda Maximoff and Vision respectively, living in an imagined reality.

Following that is the action packed “The Falcon and Winter Soldier” which also received a first look teaser. It will showcase Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprise their respective titular roles and face off against Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo. The six-episode original will be a direct follow up to “Avengers Endgame” which saw Captain America pass down his shield to Sam Wilson aka The Falcon. It will release on March 19.

The company also released a teaser for Tom Hiddleston’s “Loki” series which will premiere in May 2021. It will depict the God of Mischief’s adventures through time and space after he escaped with the tesseract in “Avengers Endgame”.

The studio’s first ever animated original titled, “What If…” will take inspiration from its comic counterpart and feature alternate realities, weaving characters into different storylines. It will be narrated by The Watcher, voiced by Jeffrey Wright. The show is set for a summer 2021 release and also was teased at the conference.

Finally, Feige announced Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan for the new Ms. Marvel series via a sneak-peek. According to the official announcement:

“Kamala Khan — a 16-year-old Pakistani-American growing up in Jersey City. A great student, avid gamer, and voracious fan-fic scribe, Kamala has a special affinity for Super Heroes, particularly Captain Marvel. However, Kamala struggles to fit in at home and at school — that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life is easier with super powers, right?”
