Netflix has announced a Korean version of its smash-hit Spanish web series Money Heist (Le Casa de Papel).
The thriller revolves around a group with certain abilities and nothing to lose as they attempt to rob the Royal Mint of Spain and, later, Bank of Spain.
The Korean version’s narrative will take place on the Korean Peninsula. It will be directed by Kim Hong-sun (The Guest, Voice, Black) and written by Ryu Yong-jae and his team (My Holo Love, Psychopath Diaries).
Money Heist creator Alex Pina said:
“Korean creators have been developing their own language and audiovisual culture for years. They have managed, like our series, to go beyond cultural borders and become a point of reference for thousands of viewers around the world, especially among young people.
“That is why I find it fascinating that the world of La casa de papel is so attractive to Korean creators as to do an adaptation. The fact that the action is set on the Korean Peninsula also seems to me to be a milestone which I am really delighted about.”
The Spanish series has been revelation worldwide. The platform had revealed that over 65 million households viewed the fourth season within the first four weeks of release in 2020.
The platform will be hoping to replicate that success with its Korean adaptation.
