Gulabo Sitabo: A slice of life comedy on Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video has released the much-awaited trailer for one of the biggest digital releases of the year. Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana led Gulabo Sitabo is all set to premiere on the platform on June 12 skipping a theatrical release due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The film is a story of two individuals, hell-bent on one-upping the other by any means possible. Amitabh Bachchan plays a 78-year-old Mirza who owns an almost ancient mansion in the depths of Lucknow. Unfortunately for him, he has tenants living in his beloved haveli who won’t let him have one peaceful moment.

One of them, Baankey (Khurrana) is the biggest thorn in Mirza’s life and he is forced to consider selling his property to get rid of him. However, things are not so easy because Baankey doesn’t want to leave and will go to extreme lengths to make sure the mansion can’t be sold.

According to the official description:

Gulabo Sitabo is a quirky slice of life where Mirza and Baankey are like Tom and Jerry – unique and unmatched, friend and foe, naughty and smart, little and large, all combine to produce chaos.

The trailer is full of hilarious banter and spot-on chemistry between the two actors. By the looks of it, Gulabo Sitabo will be a roller coaster of comedy and drama.

Set initially for a regular theatrical release, the makers decided to go for a digital release instead due to cinemas being closed inevitably. Other unreleased films like Akshay Kumar’s Laxmmi Bomb, Jahnvi Kapoor’s Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, and Abhishek Bachchan and Aditya Roy Kapoor led Ludo are also following the digital release path. The pandemic has curated the new term “first day, first stream” which is here to stay.

The film has been written by Juhi Chaturvedi and directed by Shoojit Sircar.
