Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Free Guy’ coming to Disney+

Disney+ Hotstar will begin streaming the action-comedy film ‘Free Guy’ on its platform from 15 October, 2021. The film hit theatres on 13 August and received generally positive reviews.

It stars Ryan Reynolds as a bank teller named ‘Guy’, who discovers that he is actually a non-player character in an open-world video game and becomes the hero of the story, trying to save his friends from deletion by the game’s creator. Along with Reynolds, the cast also includes Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Joe Keery and Lil Rel Howery.

The trailer of ‘Free Guy’ shows Guy going about his systematic life in the middle of this extremely violent game until he finally decides that he wants more from life. He gets a glimpse behind the curtain and meets a girl (Comer) who teaches him about the threats he faces from the real world.

‘Free Guy’ has taken inspiration from multiple video games and Meta sci-fi films like Ready Player One, The Truman Show, The Matrix, Grand Theft Auto, and Fortnite. The film was initially set to release on 3 July, 2021 but went through a year-long delay due to COVID-19 pandemic before eventually releasing in the United States on 13 August, 2021.

In July 2021, Reynolds released a video on YouTube titled Deadpool and Korg React, in which he reprised his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool from the X-Men film series and Waititi reprised his role as Korg from the Marvel Cinematic Universe reacting to the trailer to Free Guy.

The screenplay of the film was written by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn and directed by Shawn Levy.
