First Pakistani OTT platform announced, people urge lenient regulation

Pakistan’s Federal Minister of Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry announced on Friday that the country was planning to launch its first native OTT platform.

Revealing that the technology part is complete, he added that the next step would be laying out a content guideline.

While the move is being hailed by many citizens, there remains scepticism over the content guidelines which will be prepared by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

A huge part of OTT platform’s success around the world has been the freedom to tell diverse stories without rigid restrictions.

Prominent actor Osman Khalid Butt urged the authorities not to severely restrict content:

Viewers also expressed doubts about the same:

It remains to be seen to what extent authorities choose to regulate content online. From a scale of television to Netflix, what level of regulation do you think needs to be imposed?
