Encanto’ is a Disney animated production about Mirabel and her magically gifted family living in the hidden mountains of Colombia. When a threat to their magic arises, Mirabel must go on a journey to save the fate of her family.

Release date

Encanto is set to release on Disney+ Hotstar on 24 December.

Synopsis

“Encanto tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to healevery child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.”

Other details

Set in Colombia, the film contains several nods and themes of magical realism (a literary genre using magical elements in ordinary settings) typical of the works by Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez. An example is in the trailer, where the fairy dust sparks in the Disney logo is changed with yellow butterflies, a recurring theme in Marquez 1967 novel ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’.
