The Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page comes out as transgender

Oscar-nominated actor, and the star of Netflix series ‘Umbrella Academy’, Elliot Page took to Instagram to share that he is a transgender person. The actor also shared his preferred pronouns to be he/they.

He also thanked the people who have supported him and the community of trans people for their courage in making the world inclusive.

The Inception and Juno actor was female at birth but now recognizes as his ‘authentic self’. Page’s gender identity being non-binary doesn’t automatically speak about his sexual orientation. It is common to mistake identity with orientation.

Page realizes that this revelation about his identity would be received with both acceptance and criticism. He wrote: “I also ask for your patience. My joy is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared of the invasiveness, the hate, ‘the jokes’, and of violence.”

The actor also talked about the constant discrimination trans people face. “The statistics are staggering. In 2020 alone it has been reported that at least 40 transgender people have been murdered, the majority of which were Black and Latinx trans women.”

Transgender is an umbrella term and so is non-binary. The latter implies that Page’s identity is neither man nor woman. ‘He/him’ and ‘they/them’ are pronouns he prefers. It is not to be confused with his sexual orientation or identity.

With this open letter, Page also introduced people with his name Elliot which was formerly Ellen.
