Dongri to Dubai: New web series unravels the exploits of the Indian mafioso

Farhan Akhtar and Riteish Sidhwani, the forces behind the massively successful Indian web series, Mirzapur and Inside Edge, are already confirmed to be working on producing Dongri to Dubai, a crime-thriller.

Excel Entertainment, Akhtar and Sidhwani’s production house’s newest venture dives into the world of crime and the Indian mafioso. The show draws its basis from investigative journalist S. Hussain Zaidi’s book of the same name.

The makers of the show plan to adapt the book into a three-season series with ten episodes each, revolving around the evolution of organised crime in present-day Mumbai. From a den housing smuggler and thugs, the city is now a well-connected syndicate of Underworld dons, mobsters and the mafia.

The first season will focus on the notorious crime boss, Dawood Ibrahim. The show is currently being written and well-known writers have absorbed themselves entirely in developing a script that chronicles the wholesome history of the Indian gangland.

Dongri to Dubai is a compilation of stories of various gangsters such as Abu Salem, Chhota Rajan, Haji Mastan, Karim Lala, Varadarajan Mudaliar and significantly Dawood Ibrahim dating between 1947 and 2011. It details the birth of the Dawood gang, the first-ever contract issued for murder, the rise of the Pathans, the role of the Mafia in show biz and Bollywood, Dawood’s move from India to Karachi, and more.

An expectant casting list hopes for some big names in the industry to headline the series as some of the powerful characters. According to media reports so far, Avinash Tiwary has been roped in to portray Dawood Ibrahim, while Kay Kay Menon is set to play Dawood’s father, Ibrahim Kasker.
