Hotstar puts halt on Disney Plus roll-out in India

Unfortunately for Disney fans, Disney Plus will not be launching in India this month as per Hotstar’s announcement on Friday.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the fans will have to wait a bit longer for the launch of the streaming platform which was originally scheduled to release on March 29, 2020.

Disney had decided to use the popularity of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to push up its subscriptions.

But with BCCI’s decision to postpone the T20 cricketing tournament, they pushed the release of Disney+ as well.

Uday Shankar, President of The Walt Disney Company APAC and Chairman of Star & Disney India, said in a statement:

We recently announced that Disney+ would launch in India through the Hotstar service in conjunction with the beginning of the Indian Premier League cricket season. Given the delay of the season, we have made the decision to briefly pause the roll-out of Disney+ and will announce a new revised premiere date for the service soon.

Hotstar users will no longer be able to access the Disney+ content, including popular Star Wars series The Mandalorian, that became available on the app ahead of the release of the platform.

Several OTT platforms including Netflix and Amazon Prime have halted production of their originals amid fears of the Coronavirus pandemic.
