Akshay Kumar’s Laxmii joins worst-rated films on IMDb

Laxmii has completely failed to live up to the audience’s expectations. The Disney+Hotstar film was released on November 9, 2020.

Starring Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani, the film managed to garner a rating of only 2.2/10 on IMDb at the time of writing.

Categorised as an action-comedy-horror, it is a remake of the 2011 Tamil film, Muni 2: Kanchana. It revolves around a man who is possessed by the ghost of a revenge-seeking transgender for the wrongs done to them.

According to The Envoy Web’s review of Laxmii, rated 1/5, the film ends up being a mess, in spite of being well-intentioned. Its aim to tackle the stigma against the transgender community by highlighting their plight fell flat as the message got lost in cinematic translation.

“The story itself is regressive and problematic, to say the least. The transgender community is represented in the most stereotypical fashion. The film is also deeply misogynistic. Kiara Advani’s character, Rashmi, is testament to that. From the casual bigotry to the misplaced songs, this film feels lost in time. It has been made at least a decade too late.”

With abysmal ratings, where about 70% of IMDb users who rated the film giving it a score of 1/10, Laxmii underwent a similar fate as that of Sadak 2.

A little more than a week before its release, the film had to change its name from Laxmmi Bomb to Laxmii. Social media is now abuzz with humorous comments about how the film bombed.

Written and directed by Raghava Lawrence, it was his directorial debut in Bollywood. But it couldn’t come even close to the success his film, Kanchana, experienced in the Tamil film industry.
