Discovery launches India’s first factual entertainment platform

Discovery has ventured into the world of video streaming in India with their own subscription-based platform called Discovery Plus.

With the growing popularity of digital content, many companies are turning towards the internet to expand viewership.

The Discovery Plus app will provide content in eight different languages including Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali and Marathi at a price of ₹299 per year or ₹99 per month.

The app will begin by catering to TV infotainment viewers across Tier-I and Tier-II towns.

According to Megha Tata, Managing Director – South Asia, Discovery Plus will the first of its kind. She further added:

There are over 40 OTT players, but all of them are in the scripted entertainment space. In the factual entertainment or real-life entertainment space, there is none. We felt, there is an opportunity for us to bring content to the audiences who are consuming this kind of content, but do not have a product which gives them the ease and access of content on devices they are using the content for

Tata is confident about Discovery Plus and its success in a country like India.

The platform will provide a wide range of content and will feature popular shows like Bear Grylls’ Man vs Wild, Josh Gates’ Expedition Unknown, and Buddy Valastro’s Cake Boss.

Along with these, it will also cater to a younger audience with kid-friendly shows like Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, Crikey! It’s The Irwins, Kids Baking Championship, and The Cute Ones, How Do They Do It?

Not to forget, documentaries and specials like Racing Extinction, First In Human, The Great Migration, India Emerges: A Visual History, and Apollo: The Forgotten Films.

Issac John, Business Head – Digital (South Asia), said:

In a digital world that’s laden with hours and hours of scripted content, Discovery Plus offers a unique and untapped opportunity for us to build on the trust of the flagship brand and offer content that truly powers people’s passions across verticals as varied as adventure, science and lifestyle to name a few
