Netflix is not letting the pandemic put a damper on proceedings and rolling out fresh content on the regular. After recent announcements like Snowpiercer, Cursed and I’m No Longer Here, yet again, the streaming giant has revealed a new original film to add to the stay-at-home watchlist. Directed by Academy Award winner Spike Lee, the movie is titled Da 5 Bloods. It stars Chadwick Boseman, Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., and Jonathan Majors, among others.
Based around the infamous Vietnam War, four US Veterans return to the Asian country after years to recover their fallen squad leader’s (Boseman) remains and find buried gold which they chanced upon during the war.
Considering the trailer, Da 5 Bloods touches upon every aspect of the war’s past and its impact on the present. With The Chamber Brothers’ hit single “Time Has Come Today” accompanying the almost three-minute footage, there are scenes of political unrest, the characters reliving possible traumatic experiences and armed conflict, to say the least.
An interesting aspect of the film is ironically its aspect ratio. The narrative seemingly switches between the two time periods and while the modern-day scenes are in the widely used 16:9 layout, the past scenes including Boseman’s are in the 4:3 ratio which also includes actual footage from the war.
Lee is following up his Oscar-winning film BlacKkKlansman with this “joint” which looks to be at the same level as all his other work. Da 5 Bloods will be available on Netflix from June 12.
