Clickbait on Netflix: Dark thriller on social media and abduction

Netflix’s latest addition to the thriller category ‘Clickbait’, takes us into the dark side of social media, internet conspiracy theories, and sinister abduction plot. The streamer recently released an official trailer for the same.

The upcoming American-Australian miniseries has Tony Ayres and Christian White as its creators. Brad Anderson, Emma Freeman, Ben Young, and Laura Besley will direct, with Ayres serving as showrunner.

The 8-episode thriller showcases the story of Nick Brewer (Adrien Grenier), who mysteriously vanishes one day. While his wife (Betty Gabriel) and sister (Zoe Kazan) launch a search for his whereabouts, a livestream comes on with Nick battered and holding placards.

The placards display statements like “I abuse women.” and “At 5 million views, I die,” deepening the mystery. With police trying to find Nick, the absurd allegations might quickly change Nick’s stance — “Victim or suspect? Threat or confession? All of the above?”

Netflix’s official synopsis for ‘Clickbait’ reads:

“A compelling, high stakes thriller that explores the ways in which our most dangerous and uncontrolled impulses are fueled in the age of social media, revealing the ever-widening fractures we find between our virtual and real-life personas.”

Produced by Australian-based Matchbox Pictures and Tony Ayres Productions (TAP) together with Heyday Television, the series is all set to premiere on the OTT platform on Wednesday, August 25.
