Citadel: Everything we know about the Prime Video series

Since Prime Video’s Citadel was announced in January 2020, the science fiction drama television series has garnered a lot of hype. The main series stars Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden in the lead and has been created by Josh Appelbaum & Bryan Oh.

Furthermore, the Russo Brothers are associated with the project as Executive Producers. The show is a co-production between their AGBO banner and Midnight Radio for Amazon Studios.

What is the show about?

Citadel is touted as an action-driven espionage series with a compelling emotional center. Furthermore, it is not just one show but an expansive universe.

The American edition will act as the mothership series with several local language spin-off set in the Italian Alps, India, Spain, and Mexico, released subsequently.

The six-episode first season wrapped filming in June 2022. Also, it is the second most expensive show of all time after The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, with a budget of US$250 million.

Who else stars in it?

The main series will also see Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville, Osy Ikhile, Ashleigh Cummings, Roland Møller, and Caoilinn Springall. The Indin edition will star Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead and will be directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK.

Also, the Italian version will be co-produced by Amazon Studios and Cattleya (Gomorra), as part of ITV Studios.

What the cast and creators said

Talking about Citadel, Madden said: “There are multiple characters and multiple storylines that all intertwine, and I personally play a character who is an amnesiac—eight years of his life, he’s basically become a new person. There’s a journey of discovering who he was before the accident happened, and he no longer remembers anything.

It’s a clash between the life that he’s been living for eight years, and the life that he used to live. You get to delve into exploring the psyche of dealing with the consequences of things that you’re not aware that you’ve done.”

Priyanka Chopra, in an interview with WWD, talked about Citadel and said: “Then I have the exact opposite of that — a spy show with the Russo brothers for Amazon Prime with Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci. It’s called Citadel and it’s really going to be amazing. It was a lot of work. I have a lot of scars to prove it.”

Furthermore, Amazon said: “All of the local series are meant to enhance the entire entertainment experience and will be available for the viewer to deep dive into an imagined layered world.”

Does Citadel have a release date?

In a recently released teaser, it has been confirmed that the main series will begin streaming on April 28, 2023. A full trailer is due to release soon and will be updated here.
