Charlize Theron and Niki Caro join forces for women’s surfing film at Netflix

Renowned filmmaker Niki Caro and Charlize Theron have announced that they have teamed up to develop a feature film about female surfers that mainly revolves around the concept of gender equality, for Netflix.

The film is set to be based upon the New York Times Magazine article called, “The Fight for Gender Equality in One of the Most Dangerous Sports on Earth”, written by Daniel Duane.

The article discusses the absence of gender equality in big-wave surfing and real-life women like Bianca Valenti, Andrea Moller, Paige Alms, and Keala Kennelly, who are pushing for equality.

The movie adaptation’s screenplay is written by Becky Johnston, and it will follow four women as they surf the world’s most dangerous areas and battle for equality in big wave surfing.

Furthermore, the movie dwells upon the four characters as they surf dangerous areas like California’s Maverick’s and Maui’s Jaws, the four women create a deep relationship, claiming their right to compete in male-dominated events.

Charlize Theron, who recently appeared in the Netflix smash, “The Old Guard”, will produce the movie through her production banner Denver & Delilah. While, Caro, best known for directing “Mulan” for Disney, will helm the feature film.

Caro is also set to produce the movie alongside Charlize Theron, AJ Dix, and Beth Kono of Denver & Delilah.
