Bombay Rose: Netflix’s venture into animated India

Netflix recently unveiled the trailer for Gitanjali Rao’s “Bombay Rose”. The film was officially released back in 2019 and will now greet the OTT audience on Netflix India.

The film had its world premiere at International Critics Week at the 2019 Venice Film Festival. It was also screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.

The trailer showcases three unique love stories: between a Hindu woman and a Muslim man, between two women and between movie stars and their fans.

Rao has hand-painted Bombay Rose frame to frame. The film took 18 months and 60 artists to get its animation completed.

Prominent names like Anurag Kashyap, Makrand Deshpande, Amardeep Jha and Shishir Sharma have lent their voices to the characters of Bombay Rose.

Going by the trailer, the film seems very artistic given the Hindustani background music but also appears to be mainstream Bollywood in its representation.

The description of Bombay Rose reads:

“An animated romance hanging precariously between living on the streets and loving on the screen, Bollywood style.”

The film will be available to stream from December 4.
