‘Blade Runner 2099’ series announced by Prime Video

Prime Video has ordered a brand new series titled ‘Blade Runner 2099’. Ridley Scott, who directed the original 1982 ‘Blade Runner’ film will be the executive producer.

This is the first live-action series in the universe. The 1982 film was followed by 2017’s ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and an anime ‘Blade Runner: Black Lotus’ which released last year.

The original film is an adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ and is set in a dystopian 2019 LA. It focuses on synthetic humans known as replicants, created by the powerful Tyrell Corporation to work on space colonies. However, when a rogue trio of replicants escape to earth, a cop is tasked with hunting them down.

Vernon Sanders, head of global television, Amazon Studios said, “The original film, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers.

“We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”

Silka Luisa has written the script and will also be exec producing the show. It will be produced by Alcon Entertainment alongside Scott Free Productions and Amazon Studios.

The release date is not yet known.
