Asian Americans lead new Netflix Animations

Netflix announced that it will be expanding its animated products with new content from Asian American creators. Three projects; ‘The Monkey King’, ‘Mech Cadets’ and ‘Boons and Curses’, are being set up for a 2023 release, whose target audience will be kids, namely from ages six to 11.

All three brand-new projects are aimed at putting Asian American characters in the spotlight for children all across the world.

These films and series will join Netflix’s animation lineup from world-class Asian American filmmakers with a diverse spectrum of styles, voices, and stories to tell.

‘The Monkey King’ is an action-comedy movie that is directed by Anthony Stacchi and is produced by Peilin Chou and Kendra Haaland.

This movie depicts the story of a unique Monkey and his magical fighting Stick, who join forces to battle gods, demons, dragons, and Monkey’s own conceit! This narrative is based on the Chinese folktale, Journey to the West.

‘The Monkey King’ is set to have an all-Asian voicing cast that includes Jimmy O. Yang, Bowen Yang, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Jo Koy, Ron Yuan, Hoon Lee, Stephanie Hsu, Andrew Pang, Andrew Kishino, Jodi Long, James Sie, and BD Wong.

‘Mech Cadets’ is an animated series that is based on a comic series ‘Mech Cadet Yu’ by Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa, from Boom! Studios. The series is executive produced by Boom! Studios, Japanese wing Polygon Pictures Inc. and Aaron Lam serves as the writer and an executive producer of the series.

This web series will follow a group of youngsters who must work together to control massive robots and protect Earth from an extraterrestrial invasion.

‘Boons and Curses’ is a comedy-action animated series. Jaydeep Hasrajani serves as the show’s creator and executive producer, and Jake Goldman is the show’s co-executive producer.

This action-adventure series follows a hero who has been transformed into a piece of butter but refuses to let that stop him from fighting bad powers.
