Rights for acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s next film ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ have been snapped up by Apple TV+, as per Deadline.
It’s based on the David Grann book ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon: The Osage Murders And The Birth Of The FBI‘.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in the lead, the high-profile film was at the centre of a full-out bidding war between streamers, which included the distributor of Scorsese’s The Irishman; Netflix.
But Apple seems to have come out on top. The film will be financed by the tech giant and marketed as an Apple Original.
Killers of The Flower Moon will also be distributed theatrically through Paramount Pictures before landing up on the platform.
This comes after Apple TV+ recently acquired rights for Tom Hanks’ WWII naval drama Greyhound.
The Irishman helped Netflix get that elusive critical acclaim, bagging ten nominations at The 92nd Academy Awards.
However, the platform was criticised for not allowing a full-fledged theatrical release for the film, with only few cinemas allowed to screen it.
Netflix wanted the film to be exclusive to its platform, but this limited how much money it could recover through the film.
Apple looks at a different approach. It will be hoping its biggest film title yet gets the best of both worlds.
