New Angry Birds animated series coming to Netflix

Everyone’s first favourite smart phone game is getting a new animated series on Netflix. Titled Angry Birds: Summer Madness, the series was announced by the streaming giant along with CAKE Entertainment and the studio responsible for the game franchise, Rovio Entertainment.

The new show will be a long-form animated series and consist of 40 episodes of 11 minutes each. It is said to premier worldwide in 2021

According to a press release by Netflix:

Angry Birds: Summer Madness sees much-loved birds Red, Bomb and Chuck, as well as a cast of brand new feathered friends, as tween birds at summer camp under the questionable guidance of their counselor Mighty Eagle. Explosive antics, improbable pranks and crazy summertime adventures see the birds pushing boundaries and breaking all the rules while fending off the brash and obnoxious Pigs on the other side of the lake, who seem hell-bent on causing as much mayhem as possible!

Synopsis

This animated venture is the latest in an ongoing collaboration between CAKE and Rovio. In a statement, Ed Galton, CCO & Managing Director, CAKE said:

Angry Birds are about to smash the small screen and we are thrilled to be making the journey with Netflix as our global partner.

To this, Ville Heijari, CMO, Rovio added:

Angry Birds animated content plays a key role in our long-term franchise strategy. After more than a decade in hit games, blockbuster movies and licensed products, this is the Angry Birds’ first foray into a long-form series. We’re delighted to continue our partnership with CAKE and can’t wait to unveil the world of Angry Birds: Summer Madness to viewers on Netflix.

The first mobile game back in 2009 set the base for what has now become a global brand and inspired toys, television shows, print publications, food products and even amusement park attractions.

Rovio along with Sony Pictures made an Angry Birds animated feature film in 2016 with a sequel released in 2019. Both films were met with praise and were successful at the box office. According to Wikipedia, Angry Birds 2 is the best reviewed animated film based on a video-game on Rotten Tomatoes, as of 2020.

The new animated series is reported to be taking inspiration from the humour and tone established by the film franchise and showcasing a fresh look at the same time.
