Amazon Studio’s ‘The Wheel of Time’ gets new motion poster

Amazon Prime Video’s much-awaited American epic fantasy series, ‘The Wheel of Time’ will premiere on the platform soon. An adaptation of Robert Jordan’s best-selling novel series of the same name has created a buzz in the streaming space for being touted as the next ‘Game of Thrones’.

‘The Wheel of Time’ showcases a society that looks like medieval Europe, where “channelling” magic is a real possibility and, as the title suggests, time is cyclical so that any time in future, also, is from the distant past.

The plot of the first season is set in the future, three millennia after the cataclysmal “Breaking of the World,” when a technologically advanced era known as “The Age of Legends” ends, and the “Third Age” begins.

The first season of ‘The Wheel of Time’, adapted from Jordan’s first book, ‘The Eye of the World’, revolves around the quest of Moiraine Damodred, a member of an all-women magic channeling organization called Aes Sedai, to find the Dragon Reborn, who could be the prophesied savior/destroyer of humanity.

Out of three young men she meets — Rand al’Thor, Matrim Cauthon, and Perrin Aybara — could be the one she is looking for. She has to mentor and guide them to their destiny.

The motley group of five including, a friend Egwene al’Vere and the wise-woman, Nynaeve, has to fight the forces of the evil Dark One also vying for the Dragon Reborn and out to destroy the “Existence”.

Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl, ‘I Care a Lot‘) headlines ‘The Wheel of Time’ as Moiraine. The cast forming part of the main group include, Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, Zoe Robins, Barney Harris, and Madeleine Madden.

The supporting cast includes Daniel Henney, Michael McElhatton, Alvaro Morte, Hammed Animashaun, Alexandre Willaume, Johann Myers. Maria Doyle Kennedy, Narinder Samra, and Daryl McCormack.

Produced under the banner of Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios, the series has Rafe Judkins as its showrunner and executive producer among others.

Given the high-fantasy theme and high-budget proposition, Cinesite, which has done VFX for ‘Avengers Endgame’ and ‘The Witcher‘ earlier, has been roped in for visual effects.

The series is way past the initial legal hurdles with Jordan’s widow Harriet McDougal who has come on board as consulting producer and Coronavirus quarentine issues.

The first season, for which production began in 2019, has been wrapped up and ‘The Wheel of Time’ team is informed to be already deep into the writing stages of its officially renewed second season.

The premier date for the highly anticipated first season, however, has not been announced yet.
