Prime Video’s ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’ brings 80s boxing scene to screen

Set in the 1980s, ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’ is an upcoming Tamil-language period sports drama film depicting the clash between two clans in North Chennai with the boxing culture in its midst.

Directed by Pa. Ranjith, and produced under the banner of Neelam Productions, along with Shanmugam Dhakshanaraj of K9 Studios, the film explores boxing not only as a culture but the pride, honour and legacy of clans. The trailer showcases how boxing was introduced by the British to their people, soon turning it into an undying sport in north Chennai.

The heavily action-packed film stars Arya, Dushara Vijayan, Pasupathy, Anupama Kumar, and Sanchana Natarajan.

In a press release, while speaking of the movie, Arya said:

“I have gone through a major physical transformation for this film and done a rigorous amount of training to get the physicality of techniques of a boxer right. It is a completely different role for me from my previous movies and I believe it is going to be a career defining film for me. Just like the sport, Sarpatta Parambarai promises to deliver a thrilling experience with action sequences and a storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seats.”

Film-maker Ranjith shared his views on the movie, mentioning that boxing culture was present in North Madras from pre-Independence times.

“I liked the period setup. Everything about this period felt interesting. From the situation to the costumes and the political backdrop, it’s got elements that will be a different experience for the audiences. It was also a challenge for me to deliver an experience for the audience,” he added.

‘Sarpatta Parambarai’ is set to hit the screens on Amazon Prime Video on July 22.
