Durgamati: The Myth manifests demonic possession on Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video released the trailer of Durgamati: The Myth, its upcoming Hindi film which will be available for streaming from December 11, 2020.

It stars Bhumi Pednekar, Arshad Warsi, Jisshu Sengupta, Mahie Gill, and Karan Kapadia.

The story revolves around a suspended IAS officer, Chanchal Chauhan (portrayed by Pednekar), who is recruited by CBI officer Nidhi Verma (portrayed by Gill) for a special assignment.

The trailer of Durgamati: The Myth starts in a haunting manner, where the Durgamati Mansion is displayed. A mansion from which no one has come out alive.

In comes Ishwar Prasad (portrayed by Warsi), a seemingly righteous politician who delivers lines like: “The power of people is always stronger than the people in power.” But he is not what he looks like.

There are multiple angles to the story, with ancient idols being stolen from temples, possibly by a politician who is revered by his followers. An elaborate conspiracy is hatched to flush out the culprit behind the thefts, but in all this, one life gets changed, irrevocably.

Fear and revenge come into play when Chauhan, who is being held at the infamous mansion till she finishes her assignment, is possessed by the resident ghost. With grotesque bone-breaking scenes, the presence of the ghost is drilled into the viewer’s minds, as she promises to take revenge on all those who wronged her.

The official description reads:

“Durgamati is crafted as a fast-paced, intelligent thriller in a twist-a-minute style and has strongly etched characters that will create a deep impact with the audience as they are gripped by the world of conspiracy and crime, served with a layer of scare.”

Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Akshay Kumar, and Vikram Malhotra under T-Series, Cape of Good Films, and Abundantia Entertainment, respectively; Durgamati: The Myth was earlier named Durgavati. But, the reason for the title switch has not been revealed.

Directed by G. Ashok, the one who helmed its Telugu counterpart, Bhaagamathie, the remake has elements of both a conspiracy thriller and a horror flick. The decision to release the film on Prime Video was made following the closure of theatres due to the pandemic.
