Netflix announces ‘Alma Matters: Inside the IIT Dream’

The trailer of three part series ‘Alma Matters: Inside the IIT Dream’ has been released by Netflix. The series based in IIT Kharagpur, as the makers say, “will take you inside campus like one has never been before”.

IITs are the most prominent and prestigious nationalized engineering institutions in India. The glamour and big salary packages that are handed to some IIT graduates seem to have made it the sole object of aspiration for middle-class parents across the country.

‘Alma Matters: Inside the IIT Dream’ runs over the fact that the hopes around IIT presented as a mere cakewalk, are very often the hardest, most painful and soul-shattering experiences that students go through.

The series presents conversations with students about their experience both in IIT and in their respective junior colleges where they worked strenuously to get an admission in the esteemed institution.

“We’re associating everything with numbers. Those numbers are everywhere,” a student can be seen lamenting in the trailer, about the obsession with scores. “Engineering is not about passion anymore,” says another student.

Comedian Biswa Kalyan Rath will also be featured in the series, as he will draw on his personal experiences with the IIT life. About the obsessive hustle to get into IIT, Biswa had earlier created the series ‘Laakhon Mein Ek’, streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

‘Alma Matters: Inside the IIT Dream’ is directed by Pratik Patra and Prashant Raj and produced by Dopamine Media & Entertainment Pvt Ltd.

“The IITs are the Indian version of the American dream that involves clearing the world’s toughest public exam for guaranteed lifelong success,” states the official description of the show.
