7 sports-based web series you cannot afford to miss

It’s impossible to replace the experience of actually playing sports. That feeling of exhaustion as you leave everything on the field is priceless. But there are some sports web series that come mighty close to capturing that emotion on screen as well as provide insight into what actually goes on behind the scenes in professional sporting.

Here’s a list of sports web series, fiction and non-fiction, that will exhilarate any sports fan out there:

Inside Edge

Available on: Amazon Prime Video

Following the story of Mumbai Mavericks, a T20 cricket franchise part of the PowerPlay League, Inside Edge is a gripping web series. While it does show the on-field trials and triumphs of the cricket club, the show also sheds light on the underhanded tactics of powerful men and women behind the scenes. 

It features prominent names from the entertainment industry such as Richa Chadha, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Angad Bedi, Vivek Oberoi, Tanuj Virwani and Sayanı Gupta. Created by Karan Anshuman, the web series first released in July 2017. It currently has two seasons, with a third on its way later this year.

All or Nothing: Manchester City

Available on: Amazon Prime Video

An unprecedented football web series, All or Nothing: Manchester City gives us precious insight into the club’s record-breaking 2017-18 season. The viewers are shown fascinating footage on how the players train and prepare for matches, as well as parts of their private life, Sergio Aguero’s house for example.

Featuring their iconic manager Pep Guardiola as well as all the players, All or Nothing is a treasure not only for every Manchester City fan, but all football fans in general. Join the club in its journey to becoming the first Premier League team to amass 100 points in a season.

Formula 1: Drive to Survive

A treat for F1 fanatics, Formula 1: Drive to Survive is a web series which gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of F1 drivers and their teams. Apart from all the exciting elements, the show also gives a glimpse of the sport’s dangerous side; the car crashes and injuries.

You can catch some of the most iconic F1 racers in the show, including Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. It currently has two seasons which focus on the 2018 and 2019 campaigns respectively, both of which were won by Hamilton.

Bombers

Available on: ZEE5

This football web series tells the tale of a fictional Chandannagar-based club Bombers FC. After a tragic bus accident ends up killing all but one player, the club must rebuild from scratch to ensure a local minister doesn’t turn their home ground into a shopping mall.

Directed by Vishal Furia and written by Vishal Kapoor, the web series stars Ranvir Shorey, Sakir Hussain, Varun Mitra, Sameer Soni, Sapna Pabbi, Meiyang Chang, Prince Narula and Sapna Pabbi in key roles. A second season is yet to be confirmed.

Selection Day

Available on: Netflix

An overbearing father, hell-bent on making his sons professional players, moves his family from their village to Mumbai. The problem? Only one of them actually wants to be a cricket player while the other is more interested in science.

Selection Day stars Rajesh Tailang, Yash Dolye and Mohammad Samad in lead roles along with Shiv Panditt, Ratna Pathak Shah and Mahesh Manjrekar. Two seasons of the web series are currently streaming.

All or Nothing: A season with the Arizona Cardinals

The first web series to take viewers inside the locker room, All or Nothing: A season with the Arizona Cardinals was the precursor to Manchester City’s edition. It follows the players, coaches and owners over the course of the 2015 NFL season; from the draft to the NFC Championship game.

Launched on June 1, 2016, the Amazon original was a game-changer in terms of sports shows that go beyond the game. Apart from Arizona Cardinals and Manchester City, there are a number of All or Nothing editions. The next instalment will focus on the English club Tottenham Hotspur.

Roar of the Lion

Available on: Disney+ Hotstar

This documentary web series is based on the IPL cricket team Chennai Super Kings after it returned to the tournament following a two-year ban for allegedly being involved in the 2013 spot-fixing scandal.

Produced by Kabir Khan and directed by Amir Rizvi, the web series largely shows the legendary Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni talking about the incidents. It also serves as his digital debut.
