7 family comedy shows & films like We Have a Ghost

Netflix’s latest horror-comedy flick, We Have a Ghost follows a family finding internet virality after discovering a ghost haunting their new house, inviting in the process some unwanted attention from a shadowy government agency.

Kevin’s family moves into a new house that harbors a haunting entity. Earnest is initially only known to Kevin, and gradually, he familiarizes himself with the rest of the family.

This anomalous phenomenon presents the most golden opportunity of all — internet fame! The family begins publishing videos of their interactions and adventures with Earnest, quickly gaining notoriety and becoming internet famous.

However, when the family begins to dig into Earnest’s past, they become the targets of the CIA, inviting more perils than the preternatural could ever offer.

Here are 7 other Netflix horror-comedies like We Have a Ghost, that appeal to the same genres and pertain to similar themes:

1. The Mitchells vs. The Machines (2021)

Voice cast: Abbi Jacobson, Madeleine McGraw, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Eric André, Olivia Colman, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Charlyne Yi, Blake Griffin, Conan O’Brien, Doug the Pug

Katie Mitchell has been accepted into the film school of her dreams, but one last family ride to the school turns out to be a certainty she dreads a great deal. Her dad, a lover of all things nature, gears up and ignites his rusty old car, before packing the whole family in and embarking on an awkward ride full of familial strife and souring dynamics.

However, the awkwardness turns to horrifying absurdity as a robot apocalypse wreaks worldwide terrors. The Mitchells have to contend with the apocalypse and save each other; throughout the ordeal, they find love for each other again and find strength and charm amidst their eccentricities.

A family contending with an extraordinary event is one stark commonality that both this film and We Have a Ghost share with each other.

2. Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (2023)

Cast: Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Winslow Fegley, Scoot McNairy, Brett Gelman, Ego Nwodim, Shawn Mendes, Lyric Hurd, Ben Palacios

Josh struggles with his new school and social life as his family moves to New York City. However, he begins to change for the better when he discovers Lyle, a crocodile who sings, talks and has a penchant for taking baths and consuming caviar.

Josh and the Primm family are soon met with contentions by their evil neighbor Mr. Grumps. He threatens to take Lyle out of the picture. However, the crocodile has already become an inseparable part of the Primm family and household, and they must stand up against all contentions to show the world what a family’s definition really is.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile deals with an anomalous character that changes the dynamics of a family which has recently moved into a new house, ringing a tone very similar to that of We Have a Ghost.

After her father unexpectedly gets lost at sea, Nemo teams up with an eccentric outlaw to embark on a magical journey, full of adventures fueled by dreams. It all starts when Nemo loses her father and has to move in with her awkward but well-meaning uncle Phillip in New York.

Although she struggles with her school and social life during the waking hours, during the night, a magical map to the Dreamworld introduces her to a lovable outlaw, Flip. As the two begin navigating the world of dreams, Nemo holds out for hope that she’ll reunite with her father once again.

4. Santa Clarita Diet (2017)

This extraordinary event precedes a series of diabolical lifestyle change that throws the couple in the wringer as they embark on a journey to maintain their new lifestyles and commit acts that simply can’t be categorized as normal.

The offbeat series shares a remarkable similarity with We Have a Ghost in that they both see a family becoming a part of a rapidly changing life after encountering an event that exceeds nature.

5. Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)

Cast: Jaden Michael, Gerald W. Jones III, Gregory Diaz IV, Sarah Gadon, Imani Lewis, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Shea Whigham, Coco Jones, Joel “The Kid Mero” Martinez, Chris Redd, Vladimir Caamaño, Jeremie Harris, Adam David Thompson, Judy Marte, Richard Bekins, Zoe Saldana

A trio of friends basks in the freedom of growing up while traversing the streets of the Bronx. However, their everyday adventures are also met by a couple of struggles that life in their neighborhood offers all.

These struggles are not the same for the new secret overlords, though, who operate above the socio-economic level that the local residents have to live their lives in. Out of the many reasons that separate these people from the shadows, the most horrifying is that they are bloodthirsty vampires.

An allegory for gentrification, Vampires vs. the Bronx shares the one similarity with We Have a Ghost that all others in the list do, i.e., a family unit encountering extraordinary/preternatural events and navigating the life that follows.

6. Little Evil (2017)
