Scam 1992 cast: Who plays whom in the series?

Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story premiered on SonyLIV on October 9 and has since taken the digital world by storm, with critics as well as the audience singing praises of the show.

Adapted from the book The Scam: Who Won, Who Lost, Who Got Away, co-authored by Debashis Basu and Sucheta Dalal, who were involved in the investigation that took place at the time, the ten-part web series charts the rise and fall of Harshad Mehta, the Gujarati stockbroker behind the 1992 securities scam that ran into thousands of crores.

Helmed by Hansal Mehta, the web series features several names from the 90s that were linked to the scam directly or indirectly. With an ensemble cast, it can become tasking to sift out faces and names, hence we’ve curated a list cataloguing key characters from the show.

Here’s a list of actors and the roles they essay in the critically acclaimed drama:

Pratik Gandhi as Harshad Mehta, the eponymous stockbroker who played a key role in the biggest stock market scam in India during 1992. Mehta was finally brought to justice after a thorough investigation, however, he passed away in Thane jail due to cardiac arrest in 2001 at the age of 47 years.

Shreya Dhanwanthary as Sucheta Dalal, author/journalist at a reputed newspaper. The real-life Dalal was working at TOI when she investigated the high profile scam in 1992. She is presently a Padma Shri holder and co-author of The Scam from which the series has been adapted.

Faisal Rashid as Debashis Basu, one of the journalists who investigated the 1992 scam. He is presently married to Sucheta Dalal and co-authored the book, The Scam with her.

Hemant Kher as Ashwin Mehta, Harshad Mehta’s brother and a stockbroker at his firm. He pursued a law degree in his 50s and fought several court battles to clear his brother’s name. Presently, he is a practising lawyer in the Mumbai High Court as well as the Supreme Court.

Chirag Vohra as Bhushan Bhatt, the right hand man of Harshad Mehta who first meets him as a jobber in the stock market. The character is based on Mehta’s real-life mentee Ketan Parekh, who was implicated in his own series of scams from 1998-2001.

Anjali Barot as Jyoti Mehta, Harshad Mehta’s wife. Jyoti Mehta sued a Mumbai-based broker in 2014 who owed 6 crores to Harshad Mehta since 1992. She won the case in 2019 and was entitled the complete amount with interest.

Ananth Narayan Mahadevan as S. Venkitaramanan, The governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) who is shown to be tied down by various government forces but manages to tip off journalists to aid the pursuit of Harshad Mehta.

Satish Kaushik as Manu Mundra, aka the ‘Cobra’/’Black Cobra’. This character is based on the real-life kingpin of the 80s stock-market, Manu Manek. It was speculated that Manek headed another cartel called the Marwadi Bear Cartel, during that time. However, he wasn’t booked in any stock market scam.

Nikhil Dwivedi as Tyagi, The head of Citibank Asia and the money market scandal. He is obsessed with getting Mehta implicated and goes to great lengths to make sure of it.

K. K. Raina as MJ Pherwani, Head of National Housing Bank (NHB), a government entity and the primary institution for housing finances. He attempts to bail Mehta out of the SBI scandal by allowing him to ‘borrow’ Rs 500 crores.

Rajat Kapoor as K Madhavan, The CBI officer credited with investigating the Bofors scandal in the 80s and early 90s and now tasked with exposing Harshad Mehta..

Paresh Ganatra as Maheshwari, businessman and investor based on his real-life counterpart Radhakishan Damani, the founder of DMart. He wasn’t accused of participating in any scam, however, he was linked to both Harshad Mehta and Manu Manek who were notorious for stock market manipulation. He quit the stock market in the 2000s.

Shadaab Khan as Ajay Kedia, stock and money market broker. Based on the life of Ajay Kayan, Kedia appears as a suave and confident broker who has the Calcutta Stock Exchange in the palm of his hand. He loses no opportunities to undermine the protagonist Harshad Mehta

Kavin Dave as Rakesh, based on the real-life businessman and investor, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. He is presently dubbed as the ‘king of stockmarket’. It is said that the void left after Harshad Mehta’s fall was filled by Jhunjhunwala.

Mithilesh Chaturvedi as the late Ram Jethmalani, the lawyer and former Rajya Sabha member, who headed the legal team defending Harshad Mehta.

Sharib Hashmi as Sharad Bellary, an SBI employee who is urged by the money cartel to inform Sucheta Dalal of Mehta’s Rs 500-crore scam through the bank.

Ramakant Dayma as Shantilal Mehta, Harshad Mehta’s father. He was the owner of a small textile business.

Kumkum Das as Rasilaben Mehta, Harshad Mehta’s mother.
