Made in Heaven season 2: Will the Amazon web series return?

At 0:11 and 0:18 of the following video, it seems the viewers were mercilessly teased with a second-long glimpse each of Tara and Karan from Made in Heaven.

Through the three-minute video shared on its YouTube channel, Amazon Prime Video India had made an official announcement about its new series and returning seasons on January 19, 2020. The year of 2020 was to be  “a new era of Amazon Originals”, but the pandemic and the resulting lockdown delayed and/or deferred many of its web series.

One of the casualties of this unprecedented situation is season two of Made in Heaven, Amazon Prime Video’s fourth fictional Indian original series. Zoya Akhtar, who conceptualised and co-wrote the series with Reema Kagti and Alankrita Shrivastava, confirmed back in April 2019 that the series will return for another season.

But, there has been little chatter since then and not even Amazon Prime Video India announced anything about season two of the web series in its video announcement.

Made in Heaven is the story of two wedding planners who run an agency of the same name in Delhi. It stars Sobhita Dhulipala and Arjun Mathur, along with Kalki Koechlin, Jim Sarbh, Shashank Arora, and Shivani Raghuvanshi.

Tara Khanna (played by Dhulipala) and Karan Mehra (played by Mathur) cater to the whims and fancies of the richest of the rich and make real their extravagant dreams of a big fat Indian wedding. The series also dealt with extramarital affairs, class differences, the issue of dowry, and homosexuality.

It was hugely praised by viewers and critics alike, and the outstanding performance of Mathur led him to bag a nomination for the Best Actor at the International Emmy Awards.

Made in Heaven premiered on the streaming platform on March 8, 2019. Within a month of its debut, Akhtar had announced that the scripting of the second season was underway. Following that, just before the release of another web series that she was a part of, Dhulipala had said in August 2019 that the directors and writers had kept the script of season two of the series far away from all the actors.

Earlier this year, there were rumours that the second season of the series is all set to return in January 2021 and that the production will begin in the second quarter of 2020. Subsequently, it was revealed that the shooting has been delayed due to the lockdown and the release date of season two of the series has been pushed to mid-2021.

Even till the previous month, some media outlets were saying that the series is all set to return at the beginning of 2021 only. But, neither is there any official announcement from Amazon Prime Video India till now nor any news of production of season two of Made in Heaven having been started.

Hence, with the new year being less than three months away, while there is little chance of season two returning in the first half of 2021, viewers may breathe easy as the second season might have been delayed but it would certainly not be denied to the ardent followers of the series. Especially seeing that it is very much still a work-in-progress if the following Instagram post of Akhtar from April 2020 is any indication.

Meanwhile, both Dhulipala and Mathur have decided to keep us entertained with their throwbacks as well as future glimpses of the series. It just might make the wait for the second season of Made in Heaven a bit easier.
