Yusuke Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho’s protagonist, is an ill-tempered teenager who undergoes significant growth when he takes on the role of a Spirit Detective. Takumi Kitamura plays Yusuke.
Yusuke is a 17-year-old student who frequently finds himself in fights. He gets into trouble at school and shows little fear of his teachers.
However, Yusuke is not a bad person. He never harms others unprovoked; on the contrary, there are times when he fights to protect other students from bullies.
One day, while saving a boy from getting hit by a truck, Yusuke dies. The experience changes Yusuke in several ways.
Learning to be a Spirit Detective
After his untimely death, Yusuke gets a chance to be resurrected. All he has to do is work as a detective for the Spirit World and investigate the yokai that invade the Human World.
Initially, Yusuke refuses, as he believes that his death will bring relief to his friends and mother, but he later changes his mind after seeing them grieve for him.
As soon as he becomes a Spirit Detective, he manages to free his classmate from the yokai that has possessed him and use his Spirit Energy without knowing much about it.
While working as a Spirit Detective, Yusuke keeps learning from his experiences and growing. He gets better at fighting as well as his job.
When he encounters a yokai he cannot defeat, he is sent to train under Master Genkai, who recognizes that Yusuke is a fast learner but lacks resolve.
With Master Genkai’s guidance, Yusuke finds a reason to be stronger as he observes Kuwabara’s improvement.

Yusuke learns to use his Spirit Energy in the most powerful way, and an impressed Master Genkai passes on her Spirit Wave Orb to him.
She is well aware that he will keep getting stronger, so she teaches him to resist the power that comes at the cost of everything he values.
Gaining loyal allies and friends
With time, along with physical prowess, Yusuke acquires new friends as well. Furthermore, his relationship with his old friends, Keiko and Kuwabara, also improves.
Yusuke fights yokai to save innocent people but refrains from assuming that all yokai are evil. Instead, he judges every yokai he meets based on his interactions with them.
That is why he decides to let Kurama use the Mirror of Darkness to save his mother. In fact, he selflessly saves Kurama’s life by sacrificing half of his own.
Yusuke’s compassion and selfless actions earn him Kurama’s loyalty, and later, Kurama risks his life to help Yusuke. Eventually, Yusuke even befriends Hiei.

Yusuke does not hesitate to put himself in danger for his friends. Keiko gets kidnapped, and he rushes to her aid, despite knowing that it is a trap.
When Yusuke fights a yokai as strong as Toguro, he finds out that his opponent murdered his mentor. To make matters worse, Toguro almost kills Kuwabara.
However, even at a time like this, Yusuke remembers Master Genkai’s lessons. He refuses to give up on his friends for power.
Yusuke’s resolve to save his friends helps him defeat Toguro, who fails to win against Yusuke even after using all his power.
By the end of the first season, Yusuke goes from being a reckless teenager to a responsible and powerful Spirit Detective who has forged meaningful friendships.
