Yas’ break-up story in Rye Lane explained

In Rye Lane, Dom gets eager to hear Yas’ break-up story because, unlike him, she saw the signs early and broke up with her boyfriend before any of it could hurt her.

After hearing about Dom’s break-up, Yas claimed that she went through something similar not too long ago, but she didn’t get depressed like Dom.

She was with her boyfriend for a year, and she was the one who dumped him; maybe that’s why she didn’t feel bad about it. Instead, she felt kind of relieved and empowered. Yas wondered how Dom didn’t see a single sign that said he wasn’t meant to be with Gia.

Dom confesses that he believed that they were perfect. He then questioned her if she saw her break-up coming.

Yas’ break-up with Jules

Yas says that she saw signs suggesting that she is not meant to be with her boyfriend when he didn’t wave at the people on the boat. According to Yas, there are two types of people in the world: the ones who wave at the boat and the ones who hate joy.

Dom later asks Yas about her break-up story, all excited because she moved on in an instant, and he thinks that’s iconic. Though Yas tries to explain to him that her story is not that deep, she is forced to share it now that she knows his break-up story.

Apparently, Yas and her boyfriend broke up because of A Tribe Called Quest. It is then revealed that Yas’ boyfriend is Jules, Nathan’s friend, the sculptor, who calls himself an artistic polymath.

Jules and Tabby confront Yas and Dom

Yas and Jules’ relationship wasn’t really working out and was getting stale. So Yas decided to rekindle the magic, but Jules dismissed her, criticizing the breath she has that smells like homemade hummus.

She still continued her efforts and put on the music of A Tribe Called Quest. Jules further insulted A Tribe Called Quest too. Yas held back her anger until he referred to an article that suggests how hip-hop’s promotion of violence perpetuates problematic Black stereotypes.

There and then, Yas called off her relationship with Jules by dropping the hot homemade hummus on his body. The only mistake she made in the heat of the moment was that she forgot her copy of the album The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest at Jules’ apartment.

The truth behind Yas’ break-up

Dom and Yas go on an adventure to get Yas’ copy of The Low End Theory back. They break into Jules’ apartment, only to come face to face with Jules and his girlfriend, Tabby, minutes later, who return from a trip outside the country.

Jules looks down upon Yas for breaking into their apartment, even though he has changed his locks and made sure that he has nothing to do with her.

Jules advises Dom to run away from her because she will drag him down with her petty things until he is struggling to breathe. Jules and Yas argue over who didn’t give the other some importance.

Yas says she was there while he made everything about him and his art. Jules defended himself by saying that she would not understand the creative struggle. He also makes fun of her dreams to be a costume designer for TV, films, and music videos.

Meanwhile, Dom attempts to grab Yas’ favorite album. He also defends Yas before Jules starts throwing them out. In the process, they knock down one of Jules’ belongings.

Jules spills the truth that Yas is hiding

Once the struggle is over, Jules reveals that he felt guilty about how things went down between him and Yas, but after watching her break into his apartment, he knows that he made the right decision.

So it turns out that Yas lied about her break-up story. Jules dumped her; she didn’t dump him. Outside, Dom asks her why she lied, and that’s when Yas confesses that her story is worse than Dom’s.

After her breakup, she sat around in the same pair of joggers for weeks, crying, eating sausage rolls, and leaving begging voicemails. She even stalked Jules’ new girlfriend, Tabby, and accidentally liked a photo of her from five years ago on her mother’s Facebook.

Jules told his friends that Yas is a stalker. Everyone believed it except for Cass. She didn’t tell Dom the truth because she isn’t good at sharing this side of hers. She intended to restart things with Dom, but he wasn’t interested in doing that anymore.
