Wylan: Shadow and Bone season 2 character explained

Wylan is one of the newest additions to the Crows and has quickly become an integral part of the team, saving the members from some of the toughest situations with his wit, brains, and quick thinking.

A scrawny little man with a frenetic energy with which he wades his way through battles and heists, Wylan is a new member of the Crows in Shadow and Bone.

A lover, a savior, and a demolitions expert, Wylan plays a number of roles throughout the sophomore season.

The ammunitions expert

Kaz Brekker seeks revenge upon the King of the Barrel — Pekka Rollins, and to do that, he needs the might of his fellow Crows. Another crucial component of his plan involves ammunition, so he turns to Wylan.

He’s an expert in chemistry and ammunition, and it was his smoke bombs that had helped the Crows escape in the first season. It’s those talents that Kaz recognizes and enlists him for it.

From blasting off the Crow Club to fighting the shadow monsters later on, Wylan employs his talents at ammunition exhaustively and helps his friends a great deal.

Life-saving encyclopedia

While his ammunition expertise is unrivaled, Wylan’s knowledge is not confined to bombs. The other applications of his knowledge turn up later on in Shadow and Bone season 2 when he makes an on-the-spot decision that ends up saving his team’s life.

It’s when Tolya, Zoya, and the Crows head off to Shu Han in order to retrieve the legendary Neshyenyer. They go to Bhej Ju, where Sankta Neyar believes them all to be thieves and captures Tolya, Kaz, Jesper, and Inej inside a room where poisonous gas emits from a duct and threatens all their lives.

When Wylan finally comes to learn of the dire circumstances his friends are in, he comes up with the perfect antidote to their poison in a fraction of a second, picking the butterflies he was marveling at outside and making them all eat them. The Datura Meloxia in the butterflies acts as the anti-dote and saves all their lives.

Jesper’s man

Wylan and Jesper are in a relationship and it’s earned an official title by the end of Shadow and Bone season 2, but the journey up to that point is a bit rough. At the beginning of the season, both steal romantic glances and share a flirtatious dynamic.

Then Jesper presents the question about why Wylan had bailed after they had shared a night together when they met before, in Ravka. Wylan later explains that he never took Jesper to be one who sticks around and wants something for the long run.

Jesper tells him that he might as well consider changing that with him, and soon the heat between the two turns up to an eleven. When they’re in Shu Han, their relationship faces another tumble when Jesper learns that Wylan can’t read.

It’s due to his severe dyslexia and it’s something he’s really insecure about. When Jesper keeps trying to correct the awkwardness between them, he only comes off as patronizing. It takes him to actually open up honestly and address his own insecurities about being a Durast to finally reach out to Wylan.

At the end of the season, their relationship is marked by Jesper addressing his love as “my man.”
