Why does Baek Hyun-Woo want to divorce Hong Hae-In?

Queen of Tears‘ Baek Hyun-Woo and Hong Hae-In had the “wedding of the century.” Three years later, they are in a terrible marriage and he wants to divorce her at any cost.

Baek Hyun-Woo married Hong Hae-in after falling for her and at the same time being constantly worried about her clumsy, error-prone self.

He saw in her a helpless case of a poor woman who needed help and he stepped up to help her while falling for her.

However, when he saw the holes in her clothes, he failed to see the high fashion in them. She turned out to be the heiress of the country’s biggest conglomerate.

It was a nightmare for him and he grew cold feet, which he promptly brought to his home and plonked on his bed. However, Hong Hae-In came to take him back with her.

Baek Hyun-Woo’s role

They had a grand wedding and their lives were full of bliss. However, three years into their marriage, Hyun-Woo wants to divorce her but doesn’t have the courage to show her the papers.

Hyun-Woo is the legal director for the Group and along with the business that his wife handles, he helps out each and every one in the family with their respective legal troubles.

In return, he gets the scorned looks from all of them most of the time. His in-laws are not terribly fond of him, to put it in mildly. To put it precisely, they don’t see him as part of the family really.

The extended family lives under the same roof, and Hyun-Woo doesn’t have much of a breathing room, despite having a room to himself, which is quite some distance from his wife’s room.

The work troubles

He is an employee who got to marry the heiress through sheer luck. He certainly lives like an employee in the house as well.

At work, he holds a great position but the last word is always Hong Hae-In’s.

If she wishes for a certain thing to be her way, Hyun-Woo better work to realize her vision, and sort out the legal mess it may cause.

He only married into the family because of her. She told Hyun-Woo before marriage that he could trust her and that she’d protect him and never make him cry.

The scary in-laws

However, his in-laws have only made him cry and vent his frustrations to his friends and his psychiatrist. He lives in a stressful environment like no other.

His trust in Hong Hae-In has disappeared completely and he believes she doesn’t care how her family treats him. He sees no point in such a marriage but he still can’t go through with divorce.

The reason for that is that Baek Hyun-Woo is scared of what Hong Hae-In and her father might do. She isn’t forgiving to those who leave or betray her.

Her father doesn’t like when someone turns their back on them. He believes in stabbing those in the back who abandon him. Baek Hyun-Woo dares not bring up the divorce for that very reason.

However, he does end up mustering the courage and approaches Hong Hae-In with the divorce papers, only for her to drop the bombshell and tell him she’s dying, with only three months left to live.

As he finds his old love for her reigniting, Hyun-Woo has the most important reason now for not being able to divorce her.
