In Tin & Tina, guided by the teachings of the Bible, the titular twin siblings commit horrifying acts, not knowing that what they are doing isn’t morally right.
The first time Adolfo and Lola meet Tin and Tina, they notice how strange these twin siblings are. Lola makes the decision that they should adopt them, considering that they are looking for love.
Adolfo and Lola spend time with the twins and realize how obsessed they are with their religion. They refer to pop music as Satan’s music, and even the games they play involve something related to the Bible; sometimes these games are life-threatening too.
Every other conversation they have involves God and the teachings of the Bible, which isn’t a problem until they start killing people after misinterpreting those teachings.
Tin and Tina’s past
Tin and Tina were abandoned when they were only weeks old. Someone left them at the gates of a convent, which was built in the 15th century after the birth of Christ. The doctrine and lifestyle of the convent have remained old-school.
When Adolfo and Lola first visit this convent, looking to adopt children, Mother Asunción claims that they don’t believe in the modern values of the world.
The twins are not allowed to embrace the developing world out there and are made to believe that God is the one who does everything. This explains why they have never seen television before and why they refer to pop music as Satan’s music.
Tin and Tina certainly grew up surrounded solely by the teachings and stories of the Bible. At one point in the film, the siblings mention that the people at the convent used to beat them with sticks and cut their hair whenever they acted mischievously. According to the convent, they were committing sins.
These teachings were forced onto their young minds, and they may have started completely believing in these teachings when whatever was taught to them eventually came true.
The teachings molded them in such a way that they looked for redemption through the Bible, to the point where they feared that if they didn’t do the right thing, they would be punished.
Are Tin and Tina innocent?
Throughout the film, Tin and Tina indulge in various activities that see them threatening the lives of other people. In the eyes of Tin and Tina, they are just following what the Bible has taught them.
Not even once in the film do they act evil. They look for the good of everyone and just misinterpret things taught to them, as this world outside the convent is new to them. The only thing they are able to rely on in this new world that is familiar to them is their Bible, which has taught them the way of life for years.
Lola mistakes them for evil. Lola and Adolfo are new to parenting themselves, and taking care of such unique children is bound to be difficult for any couple. Not to say that Tin and Tina’s acts are justified, but they just acted upon what they were taught.
