In Silo, for years, humans have lived inside a giant underground silo to protect themselves from the poisonous air outside. However, a hard drive from before Silo hints that the outside is nothing like what they are being shown.
The people of Silo have long feared going out to clean. Every time someone is sent outside for their crimes, the people see them clean Silo’s screen and die moments later because of the poisonous air.
The deaths of these people sent outside remind the people of Silo that the outside is not safe. However, some intellectuals at Silo believe that they are being lied to.
Judicial has been trying to stop people like them from finding out about the truth and trying to open the door of Silo. They fear that certain objects from the past will encourage people to make this move.
Something like this happens when George Wilkins, a relic dealer, and Allison Becker, from Silo’s IT department, access a hard drive from before Silo.
Jane Carmody’s video
On that hard drive, a video of someone named Jane Carmody from the outside hints that the officials at Silo are indeed lying to people. Everything outside is safe and full of life.
The likes of Allison Becker, George Wilkins, and Sheriff Holston Becker die in search of the truth about the outside world. Juliette Nichols, an engineer from the Mechanical, becomes the next sheriff and the person to learn about the hard drive and Jane Carmody’s video.

Juliette attempts to broadcast Jane Carmody’s video on every screen of Silo to show everyone the truth. In the process, she becomes a mortal threat to the place and the next person to go out and clean.
How is it outside?
When Juliette is sent outside, she sees the same scenario that Allison and Holston did and that Jane Carmody’s video showed. She drops the cloth and doesn’t clean Silo’s camera.
Unlike Allison and Holston, Juliette doesn’t die outside. It is hinted that Judicial purposefully used faulty tapes on Silo’s suits to make sure the people outside died, and Martha replaced those heat tapes with her tapes to save Juliette.
Juliette survives and discovers that the beautiful scenario that she is being shown is a hologram too when she tries to place Holston’s badge on a rock where he died.

The interim mayor of Silo, Bernard, realizes that Juliette has figured out their secret. He runs to the server room, which opens with a special key that has the number 18 written on it.
After climbing up the hill in front of her, the beautiful scene in front of Juliette’s eyes disappears, and she sees the real face of Earth. It has become a barren land with no life.
As she walks, there are circles everywhere on the land, suggesting that there is more than one Silo and many more people living underground.
