Plot summary
The Crow Platoon, led by Sergeant Kim, is taken hostage by the special infectees, led by Nam Sang-won. The special infectees experiment on the soldiers to turn them into monsters.
A special infectee, Ja-yeong, who was shown kindness by one of the soldiers, helps the Crow Platoon by killing the monsters they are forced to fight as soon as Sang-won and his group leave.
Sang-won had known about his child all along; he had seen the baby grow in Yi-kyung’s womb when she had gone to Bamseom to find her fiancé.
He even planted a part of himself into the unborn child. He now asks Dr. Lim to take him to the stadium, believing that his child is there.
All the soldiers lose their lives fighting a horde of monsters; Sergeant Kim is the only survivor. While leaving the bureau, Sergeant Kim finds an injured man and takes him with him.
The man accompanying Sergeant Kim is none other than Lee Eun-hyeok. He kills himself, only to be born again within hours, fully healed.
Eun-hyeok reveals that he is one of the neohumans, who are different from monsters and special infectees. Neohumans can communicate with monsters.
Becoming a neohuman is the final stage of monsterization. Neohumans have their memories, but they cannot feel anything because they have no emotions.
Furthermore, neohumans, when killed, turn into a cocoon and are reborn, which makes them effectively immortal. All humans will eventually become neohumans.
As Eun-hyeok means no harm, Sergeant Kim allows him to accompany him to the stadium, where the group of special infectees is headed.
Meanwhile, the monster inside Hyun-su takes control of his body, but it does not kill Eun-yu, who knocks him out, causing the monster to retreat and Hyun-su to take control.
It turns out that Hyun-su did not kill Yi-kyung; he simply subdued her. He believes that he can still save her, as Hyun-su can look into the human minds of monsters.
Hyun-su gets into her head and urges her to resist monsterization. With his help, she turns back into a human but not before all her wounds are healed.
On his way to the stadium, Park Chan-yeong runs into Ha-ni, who is showing early symptoms of monsterization. She has come back to help her new friends after drugging Ho-sang.
Park Chan-yeong and Ha-ni then return to help Eun-yu, whereas Yi-kyung, now a human, makes her way to the stadium, which is the only place her daughter can go to.
Ho-sang starts turning into a monster and takes his own life to prevent the inevitable. Ha-ni now stays by Park Chan-yeong, Eun-yu, and Hyun-su’s side.
After turning Yi-kyung into a human, Hyun-su’s monster takes control of his body once again, but Eun-yu remains determined to bring Hyun-su back.
When Hyun-su encounters a special infectee, who is part of Nam Sang-won’s group, Hyun-su fights him and gets separated from Eun-yu.
Eun-yu then sees her brother with Sergeant Kim. When Eun-hyeok, who is now much stronger and faster, sees Hyun-su fighting the special infectee, he joins the fight.
While Sergeant Kim, Park Chan-yeong, and Ha-ni leave for the stadium, Eun-yu, refusing to abandon her brother and Hyun-su, stays behind.
By the time the fight ends, Hyun-su accepts the monster inside him as another version of himself and merges with it. His human and monster sides are no longer in conflict.
Eun-yu finally reunites with her brother, whom she has been desperately trying to find, only to be told that he does not want anything to do with her because he cannot feel anything.
However, Eun-yu does not lose hope. She believes that her brother can learn to feel emotions again. Eun-yu, Eun-hyeok, and Hyun-su then go to the stadium to face Sang-won.
Eun-hyeok and Hyun-su have to leave Eun-yu behind because she starts showing early symptoms of monsterization. All she asks of Hyun-su is to remind her to be herself if she ends up like Eun-hyeok.
At the stadium, Chief Ji frees Ye-seul, who had been taken into custody by Master Sergeant Tak. It is revealed that Ye-seul is not Chief Ji’s daughter.
Ye-seul started treating Chief Ji as her mother after she lost her parents, but Chief Ji never considered Ye-seul family. Chief Ji had a son who turned into a monster.
No one knows that Chief Ji has been keeping her son safe in the basement and has been feeding those who show symptoms of monsterization to him.
She now plans to feed Ye-seul to her son, but Ye-seul is rescued by Master Sergeant Tak, who becomes aware of Chief Ji’s secret and arrests her.
When Sang-won and his group take control of the stadium, Chief Ji helps the survivors one last time by giving Master Sergeant Tak the layout of the stadium.
Master Sergeant Tak and his soldiers prepare to get the survivors out of the stadium through a secret passage to keep them safe from the special infectees.
Sang-won finally meets his daughter at the stadium. As Sang-wook’s body keeps resisting Sang-won, he plans to possess his daughter’s body.
However, Yi-kyung arrives at the stadium to foil his plans. She reconciles with her daughter, who agrees to escape with Yi-kyung after giving her a second chance.
Sang-won catches them escaping, and Yi-kyung sacrifices her life to save her daughter. Just before Sang-won kills Yi-kyung, she tells her daughter that her name is Seo Yi-su.
Sang-won imprisons Yi-su and prepares to take over her body, but Yi-su escapes by turning several survivors, including Yeong-su, into monsters.
However, Sang-won manages to capture her once again. He also kills Ms. Cha when she tries to protect Yi-su and Yeong-su.
Ending explained:
Driven by ambition
Sergeant Kim and Park Chan-yeong return to the stadium with Ha-ni. Master Sergeant Tak reveals to Sergeant Kim that he has been showing early symptoms.
Despite this, Sergeant Kim and the other soldiers are still willing to follow Master Sergeant Tak. Sergeant Kim asks him to keep fighting to protect the survivors until the very end.
Dr. Lim retrieves one last vial of Sang-won’s blood, which he had used to create special infectees. He had accompanied the soldiers to Bamseom Bureau for this vial.
He promised to give that vial to Master Sergeant Tak and turn him into a special infectee to enable him to protect the survivors, but he breaks his promise when he finds out that Yi-su can turn him into a monster.
Dr. Lim now wants to become a special infectee himself, but his dream never becomes a reality because Master Sergeant Tak informs Sang-won about how Dr. Lim created special infectees.
Sang-won is not happy about Dr. Lim using his blood, so he not only kills Dr. Lim but also orders his right-hand man, Chi-seong, to kill all other special infectees.
Chi-seong lies to Sang-won and assures him that he followed his orders. Sang-won then kills Chi-seong as well and takes over Yi-su’s body.
Yi-su dies with her father
Hyun-su and Eun-hyeok finally reach the stadium. Hyun-su reunites with Yi-su but discovers that Sang-won has killed Yi-kyung and possessed Yi-su’s body.
Hyun-su does not let Eun-hyeok hurt Yi-su’s body to kill Sang-won. He is determined to drive Sang-won out of her body and keep Yi-su safe.
Sang-won directs all the people Yi-su turned into monsters to attack Hyun-su and Eun-hyeok, and Eun-hyeok takes advantage of the chaos to attack Sang-won.
Hyun-su fails to protect Yi-su, and Eun-hyeok manages to land a fatal blow, which results in Sang-won leaving Yi-su’s dying body.
As Yi-su says her final goodbye to Hyun-su, Sang-won goes back to Sang-wook’s body. It is then that Hyun-su realizes that Sang-wook is still alive, which is why his body has been resisting Sang-won.
Sang-wook finally gets the opportunity to kill Sang-won. He drags his body towards the fire and holds it there until Sang-won dies in his body.
The establishment of Sweet Home
While evacuating the survivors from the stadium, Master Sergeant Tak turns into a monster, but just as Sergeant Kim had asked him, he helps protect the survivors even as a monster.
Master Sergeant Tak’s monster form is a wall of ice that only lets humans pass through it, preventing Jae-jin, one of the last two remaining special infectees, from blending with the crowd.
With the help of Master Sergeant Tak and Ja-yeong, the other special infectee, Sergeant Kim is able to kill Jae-jin and escape alive, while Ja-yeong dies with Jae-jin.
Now that all the special infectees are dead and all the survivors have evacuated the stadium, Hyun-su wishes to turn monsters back into humans.
Eun-hyeok informs Hyun-su that Eun-yu, who has turned into a monster, will follow the other neohumans once she undergoes the final stage of monsterization.
As Sergeant Kim has to find a new home for the survivors, Hyun-su, who is now protecting the survivors, suggests that they live with the neohumans.
The survivors then start living with the neohumans to stay safe from the monsters, allowing human society to grow once again.
While Hyun-su cannot bring back every person who has turned into a monster, he gets to live with Eun-yu, who is a neohuman now, and Eun-hyeok, who is learning to feel emotions again.
