Sophie: Good Grief character explained

Sophie is one of Marcus’ best friends who is quite flaky and a bit much to handle. The character is played by Ruth Negga.

Sophie is dating Terrence and they adore each other. However, Sophie is constantly talking about how she doesn’t want to settle down and prefers excitement.

In truth, she is afraid of the stability that Terrence brings, and that attitude affects her relationship.

During the holiday party, Oliver gifts her a pair of hand-crafted maracas. It’s a not-so-subtle reference to her tone-deaf voice and everyone else agrees.

She plays along with the joke as everyone enjoys the festivities before them, showcasing her jolly nature.

Despite her attention-seeking behavior, she has Marcus’ back always

Floating through life

6 months after Oliver’s death, Sophie pushes Marcus to join the dating apps and get back out there, even though he doesn’t want to.

She is still happy with Terrence, but that doesn’t last long. Later that year, she shows up one day announcing that she and Terrence have broken up.

Rather than talk about it, she prefers drowning her emotions in alcohol and partying to forget things.

She makes it seem like she broke up with him because she got bored, but that isn’t the truth.

Marcus suggests the trip to Paris so that they can forget their troubles for a while, and Sophie is thrilled to hear this.

She gets a date soon after arriving and is raring to move on from Terrence. She makes a big fuss about her appearance and spends the night getting drunk.

She gets a talking to from Thomas the next morning because she went home with her date even though she just met him, and she lost her phone leaving her with no means of contact.

She is picked up by the police after sleeping at a bus stop outside the city, and while Thomas is very annoyed, Sophie and Marcus aren’t taking it as seriously.

Sophie offers to make dinner for them that night but she completely burns the dish. This gives her a chance to apologize to everyone for her behavior.

She confesses that Terrence broke up with her before she never took things seriously, and she would like to win him back.

She goes back to London and eventually wins over Terrence, and when she attends the gallery showing, they are engaged.
