In Ganglands season 2, Sofia and Saber face the wrath of Almeida for having business relations with his boss’s son, Javier. While Saber survives the shootout led by Almeida’s soldiers at their house, Sofia doesn’t.
Javier, who is the son of the leader of Los Soles, always had plans to bring Sofia and Saber on board in their cocaine business, owing to the work they have done since their father died.
Javier was already working with Chris, but unfortunately, Mehdi and his team invade Chris’ lab, kill Chris, steal his diamonds, and leave. During the same heist, Javier also gets injured at the hands of Mehdi.
With Chris gone and Javier injured, Javier’s father proceeds to carry out his son’s deal. He hires a negotiator and asks him to talk to Saber and Sofia.
The deal between Sofia, Saber, and Javier’s negotiator
The associate hired by Javier’s father claims that they already had plans to replace Chris, and they certainly don’t care about the problems Sofia and Saber had with him.
Chris already had working relations with other cartels. Javier’s father didn’t want this; he has plans to expand Los Soles as the only drug cartel in Europe.
Javier’s associate offers Sofia and Saber 10% of their margin on all the drugs arriving through Antwerp. Basically, they are getting what Chris used to get.
Sofia intends to negotiate further. She instead asks for 20% of it. The associate is fine with negotiating, but he wants the demand to be reasonable.
Sofia then explains that every other trafficker in Antwerp is working with dockers. They, on the other hand, are the only ones working with customs. Javier and his father know that they have managed to do that. This edge is exactly what Javier’s father is looking for.
Since the associate can’t make this raise, he tells them that his boss’s right-hand man will come to negotiate with them.
The attack at Sofia and Saber’s house
Almeida, Javier’s father’s right-hand man, comes to take care of Javier’s business. He gets disappointed upon hearing that the associate has already started negotiating with Sofia and Saber.
For some reason, Almeida doesn’t want Sofia and Saber to be involved in this. When Almeida learns that Javier’s father had given them a heads-up for this deal, he immediately kills the associate and pins his murder on Sofia and Saber.
Back home, Saber worries that Javier’s father will find someone else for this deal. Sofia assures him that they did the right thing. They have the leverage of having customs. Javier’s associates will come knocking on their door, offering at least 15% of the profit.
Javier’s associates don’t come, but Almeida’s soldiers do. Saber fights most of them off and sees one of them kill Sofia right in front of him while she was dressing up her baby. Saber then quietly escapes his own house with Sofia’s baby and a gun in his hand.
Why does Almeida target Sofia and Saber?
Later in the show, it is revealed that Almeida intends to replace Javier’s father and run Los Soles sometime in the future. With Javier alive, Almeida knows that his goal will always be just a dream.
Still, Almeida attempts to garner the attention of Javier’s father and convince him that no decision can be made without him.
By pinning the murder of Javier’s associate on Sofia and Saber, Almeida wanted to show Javier that his son is not capable of choosing the right people for his business.
Almeida even talks straight to Javier’s father about it, and when Javier’s father claims that Almeida can’t blame him for choosing his son, Almeida gathers his loyal subordinates, kills Javier, and plans to take out his father too.
