Sergeant Kim Yeong-hu, a senior member of Crow Platoon, takes on the responsibility of protecting the survivors at the stadium. In Sweet Home, Kim Moo-yeol plays Sergeant Kim.
Sergeant Kim has been working under Master Sergeant Tak since the monsterization outbreak, but he often disagrees with Tak’s approach.
Eventually, Sergeant Kim realizes that Tak has always had humanity’s best interests at heart, but it takes him a long time to reach that realization.
At odds with Master Sergeant Tak
While Sergeant Kim believes in killing all monsters, as ordered, Master Sergeant Tak only wants to kill those that pose a threat.
Due to their differing views, the two men often clash. However, they also balance each other out when one of them loses sight of what is important.
In his relentless pursuit of dangerous monsters, Tak forgets to consider the condition of his overworked and injured team.
Sergeant Kim, who fiercely cares about his men, is not afraid to stand up to Tak and disobey his orders to ensure that his soldiers get proper rest.
Despite their disagreements and Sergeant Kim’s personal attacks, the two men work together to overthrow the government when the Prime Minister decides to kill all survivors.
They then move the survivors to an underground stadium, and Sergeant Kim continues going on dangerous expeditions to acquire supplies for the survivors.
Sergeant Kim, a no-nonsense soldier, dedicates himself to protecting the survivors as well as the soldiers who work under him, without caring about his personal life.
Unlike Tak, he shows no leniency when anyone compromises the safety of the stadium. Eventually, after losing more than half of his men in less than a year, Sergeant Kim loses faith in Tak’s leadership.
At the same time, one of Sergeant Kim’s soldiers, Yeong-seok, goes missing during a mission. Tak decides against putting more lives at risk by sending a search party for him.
Sergeant Kim has a hard time accepting Tak’s decision, and when he gets a signal from the Bamseom Bureau, he decides to look for Yeong-seok alone.
However, the other soldiers end up joining him. The mission goes wrong, as the soldiers walk into a trap laid by the special infectees.
The special infectees experiment on the soldiers by making them fight a horde of monsters. Sergeant Kim is the only one who survives because his best friend, Seok-chan, sacrifices his life to save him.
Sergeant Kim’s growth
While leaving the bureau, Sergeant Kim comes across an injured Eun-hyeok and takes him along. Eun-hyeok takes his own life but asks Sergeant Kim to wait if he wants to find out what he is.
Despite the danger, Sergeant Kim waits and learns about neohumans. He then returns to the stadium, which has been taken over by the special infectees.
Sergeant Kim now realizes that he should have listened to Tak and not put the lives of his soldiers in danger to search for Yeong-seok.
He apologizes to Tak, blaming himself for the soldiers’ deaths and the special infectees finding the stadium.
Tak then tells him about his monsterization, but Sergeant Kim, who has come to respect Tak, continues following his orders instead of isolating him.
Sergeant Kim asks Tak to hold on until the very end and be useful to them even as a monster, which is exactly what Tak does.
With his help, Sergeant Kim is able to help the survivors reach safety and also kill a dangerous special infectee. After Tak turns into a monster, Sergeant Kim leads the survivors.
Sergeant Kim no longer sees everything as black and white. His experiences have taught him that not all monsters and special infectees are dangerous.
He takes Hyun-su’s advice and arranges for the survivors to live with neohumans to keep them safe. Sergeant Kim becomes more caring and understanding, following in Tak’s footsteps.
