Satyajit Sen is a well-known journalist who has been violating laws to boost his viewership. In Call Me Bae, Vir Das plays Satyajit.
Satyajit Sen, also known as SS, works at TRP and hosts a show called The Confessional, where he invites celebrities and exposes their darkest secrets.
He claims that these revelations are of national importance, but in reality, it is the personal scandals and sensationalism that drive his high ratings.
SS never considers the consequences his actions have on his guests’ lives, not until he finally faces them himself.
Prioritizing ratings over responsibility
SS began working at a young age to provide his family with a comfortable life. Now, he boasts a successful show and multiple awards to prove his achievements.
SS has been in a relationship with Harleen, the producer of his show, but he keeps disappointing her by keeping their relationship hidden from his family.
He not only fails to value Harleen as his girlfriend but also as his producer. He believes the show belongs solely to him, never giving Harleen credit for its success.
Harleen, like many others, disapproves of SS ruining people’s lives on live television, but she can only warn him, as she fails to change his mind.
SS shows no interest in reporting actual news or seeking the truth, a fact that people like Bae and Neel recognize; a video of Bae criticizing SS for his hypocrisy goes viral.
When SS learns that Bae is working at TRP, he ensures that she pays for her public remarks. He takes pleasure in tormenting her as her superior, which is another thing Harleen disapproves of.
SS’ fall from grace
SS is able to reveal celebrities’ secrets because he receives help from Mukul Sawla, the owner of Thought Telecom, and an unknown person called Centaurus.
Sawla’s company distributes free SIM cards to women under the guise of promoting their safety. These SIM cards allow Sawla access to the users’ private data, which both he and SS exploit for personal gain.
While Sawla uses the information to harass and blackmail women, SS exploits it to uncover celebrities’ secrets that he can use to boost his show’s ratings.
The truth eventually comes to light when Bae discovers a file named Centaurus on Sawla’s computer and connects the dots between Sawla and SS. She then gains access to SS’s files and uncovers their illegal activities.
When Madhulika accuses Sawla of sexual harassment with Bae’s support, Sawla pressures SS to handle the situation, threatening to take him down as well.
SS then decides to invite Bae and Sawla to The Confessional, intending to discredit Bae by airing her past mistakes, such as cheating on her husband and shoplifting, on live television.
However, Bae refuses to be silenced. Instead, she exposes SS and Sawla’s illegal activities, turning the tables on SS, who ends up storming off the set in the same way he once forced his guests to do.
Furthermore, Harleen sides with Bae, asserting her control over the show and breaking up with SS. In the end, SS finds himself alone, with no support.
The very show he once took pride in ends up ruining his life. He is fired from TRP and faces lawsuits from former guests for violating their privacy.
