Plot summary
At his friend Nathan’s art show, Dom locks himself in a unisex bathroom and cries over the photos posted by his ex-girlfriend Gia. She is redecorating her room with her new boyfriend, Eric, who was also one of Dom’s best friends.
Yas overhears him crying and checks if Dom is okay. She notices his pink shoes and takes her time to leave the bathroom before being told by Dom that he is trying to have a private moment.
Yas meets Dom again outside, and after talking to each other, they realize that they both know Nathan and his girlfriend, Cass. Nathan uses the presence of Yas to force Dom to buy one of the pictures at his show.
Yas blames herself for putting Dom in that position, but Dom says it’s alright. He heads out, and Yas joins him for some reason. On their way, they get to know each other. Dom is a successful accountant, and Yas is a fashion designer who dreams of working for TV, films, and music videos.
The walk goes on for a very long time, and Yas sums up that Dom initially lied about running errands for his mother. He then confesses that he is about to meet his ex-girlfriend, who cheated on him with one of his best friends, to get closure and move on.
Yas understands Dom, as she went through a breakup recently too. The only thing is that she is the one who dumped her boyfriend, not him. Yas hears Dom’s story and tells him that he is the one who is crying and not moving on by going to meet both of them.
Yas intends to help Dom by joining him in this meeting, but Dom lets her know that this is a serious thing he needs to get over. Therefore, he just can’t bring a random person to this meeting.
Dom and Yas part ways, and he meets Gia and Eric at a restaurant. It turns out that Gia is making this once again about herself rather than about Dom. Gia and Eric don’t want to be reminded of Dom after seeing some things, and that’s why they called him here to clear things up.
Upon questioning why she cheated on Dom, Gia answers that she didn’t feel their relationship made sense anymore. Yas walks into the restaurant and kisses Dom on the cheek before he can feel bad about Gia’s confession.
Yas not only displays romantic chemistry with Dom, but she also reminds Gia what a terrible mistake she has made by dumping a successful and honest Dom and picking a dumb friend of his over him, who right-swiped Yas on Tinder a week ago.
Dom and Yas leave the restaurant after this shocking revelation, and Dom feels happy putting Gia through this. Dom and Yas’ stroll through the city continues.
Yas learns that Dom is a mummy’s boy who is into grand gestures. She further tells Dom about her breakup. She says she realized she was done with her ex-boyfriend when he didn’t wave at the people on the boat.
Yas drops out of an interview just to enjoy the time she is having with Dom. He doesn’t know she has done this. She continued to tell him about her breakup. Dom is eager to hear it because she moved on just like that; he feels that’s iconic.
Yas explains that she tried to recreate the spark in her relationship in various ways, but her boyfriend, Jules, who is also Nathan’s friend, dismissed all of them.
Jules further criticized her music taste and talked about an article that suggests how hip-hop’s promotion of violence perpetuates problematic Black stereotypes. That was when Yas decided to call this relationship off.
The only mistake Yas made here is that she forgot her copy of the album The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest at her ex-boyfriend’s place. To thank Yas, Dom said he would like to buy her a new copy of that album, but she just wants her copy back.
Dom pitches that he can go around and ask for it. Yas remembers that Jules is not in the country. She thinks of breaking into his apartment. Dom joins in, and they go on an adventure.
First, when Yas realizes that Jules has changed the locks, they head over to Jules’ family to see if they can retrieve a key, but they get thrown out when Dom is found stealing something.
Dom also overhears Yas saying that she hung out with him because she felt sorry for him. She later clarifies that she stayed because of another reason. She enjoyed his company, and for that, she even dropped out of an interview.
Despite what Dom and Yas did, Jules’ mothers direct them to Jules’ friend, Mona, who must have the key. Mona runs a karaoke bar and forces them to sing if they want the key.
That’s when Dom comes to realize that Yas isn’t exactly that daring and free-spirited. He tried to be like her all day, and even after learning this, he still went on stage to sing badly. This encouraged Yas to join him, and they put on a great show.
Dom and Yas end up kissing after their performance. They get the key and break into Jules’ apartment. Things go crazy as Jules and his girlfriend, Tabby, arrive at the very wrong time and come face-to-face with Dom and Yas.
Rye Lane ending explained in detail:
Did Yas really dump Jules?
Jules is disappointed to see Yas again. He advises Dom to stay away from Yas, as she will drag him down into her petty things. Dom does her best to defend Yas. He even grabs the record she left behind. In the process of being thrown out, they knock a few things dear to Jules.
Jules lets Yas know that he actually feels guilty about how things went down between them. He further reveals that he made the right decision by dumping her.
Why did Yas lie to Dom?
Upon learning that Yas has lied about dumping her boyfriend, Dom questions her. She confesses that she lied because her story is grimmer than his. She sat around in the same pair of joggers for weeks, crying and leaving begging voicemails.
She also stalked Tabby, and Jules told all of his friends that she is a stalker. Every one of them believed him except for Cass. Yas didn’t tell Dom the truth because she is terrible at this.
Yas asks Dom if they can restart things by going out and just having a drink. Dom gives this a thought and says that he can’t because she lied right from the start.
Does Dom forgive Yas?
When Dom says he can’t let go of this lie and reminds Yas that at least Gia waited for a while, Yas tells him that she just curated her story and didn’t cheat on him like Gia. The two argue over who hasn’t really moved on from their exes and part ways.
Time goes by, and they struggle to forget each other. They even try to date other people, but it’s no use. While working on a movie, Yas is reminded that, though she claims that she is not into Dom, she talks about him a lot.
Yas overhears the discussion of this movie’s plot, which is very similar to her story. She is told that Dom is really special and deserves some kind of grand gesture.
At another one of Nathan’s shows, Yas decides to pull off that grand gesture, which is actually Dom’s thing. She shows up far away in a boat and asks Dom to look for her.
Yas likes people who wave at the people on the boat. Dom waves at the boat, and it turns out that he is one of them. The couple reunites and locks a kiss.
