Rebel Ridge follows Terry, an ex-Marine, as he confronts corruption in a small town, aided by a woman named Summer. The film is now streaming on Netflix.

Plot summary
Terry Richmond arrives in Shelby Springs to post bail for his cousin, Mike, but before reaching the Town Hall, he is wrongfully detained by Officer Marston.
Marston and another officer, Steve Lann, search Terry’s belongings and seize $36,000 in cash, suspecting that the money is tied to illegal activities.
Although they release Terry, he is unable to post his cousin’s bail and learns that Mike will be transferred to state prison in a few days.
Mike, a cooperating witness in a capital murder case, helped convict a gang member, who is now in state prison. If Mike gets transferred, the same gang member will try to kill him.
When no one is willing to help him, Terry finds an ally in Summer, a woman who works at the Town Court. Summer explains that the police legally seized his money under civil asset forfeiture laws.
Terry could fight for the money’s return in court, but it would take a year and cost more than the money he is owed. Terry then attempts to negotiate with Police Chief Sandy Burnne.
He asks for $10,000 of his money back to cover Mike’s bail, offering to let Burnne keep the rest. In response, Burnne orders a raid on the restaurant Terry had sold his stake in for the money, damaging the owner Mr. Liu’s business.
When Terry meets Summer again, she reveals that she suspects a larger conspiracy. Several people like Mike have been arrested on misdemeanor charges.
They all had their bail set unusually high, and all of them had an adjournment. Eventually, they were all allowed to walk free after 90 days in custody.
Summer promises to have Mike’s bail papers ready. All Terry needs to do is arrange the money. To get Mike released, Terry then has to resort to threatening the police chief.
Having been trained in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, Terry easily holds Burnne and Steve at gunpoint at the police station, forcing them to give him the money needed for Mike’s bail.
Terry also forces another officer, Jessica, to help him. Once he reaches the Town Hall, Summer manages to get the bail order signed by the judge before the police arrive.
Terry is then arrested by the police, but surprisingly, Burnne releases him, revealing that Mike had already been transferred to state prison and killed.
Having realized his mistake, Burnne returns the rest of Terry’s money and even buys him the truck he had been saving for. He then warns Terry to leave town, threatening to arrest him if he ever returns.
Despite Summer’s suspicion that Mike and others like him were set up, Terry decides to take Burnne’s offer and leave while he still can.
However, Terry is forced to return that same night when Burnne’s men break into Summer’s apartment and drug her.
Summer, a former drug addict with a sealed criminal record, risks losing any chance of regaining custody of her daughter if she goes to the hospital now.
Terry ensures that Summer is safe before leaving town again, but the police stop Terry on his way out, and Steve tries to kill him.
Terry gets shot but manages to escape. Summer also flees town, following the advice of her police friend, whom Terry calls “Serpico”.
Terry is now determined not to back down. He wants to take Burnne down by exposing whatever corruption he is hiding, and Summer decides to help.

The hidden crimes of the police
Summer and Terry question both Summer’s colleague, Elliot, and the judge at the Town Court to understand why so many people are being arrested on misdemeanor charges and then walking free after ninety days in custody.
Two years ago, Burnne was involved in a lawsuit regarding an illegal search leading to a wrongful death. The settlement nearly bankrupted the town.
Burnne’s department was deemed uninsurable, and he was given a year to modernize and clean up his act. He was required to implement specific reforms.
These reforms were mandated because the Town Court wanted to shut down the police department and hand over the contract to the state police, knowing that Burnne lacked the funds to comply.
However, Burnne found a way to finance the reforms through asset forfeitures—Terry became just another victim of that. Most people do not contest the seizure of their property due to the time and cost involved.
Furthermore, Burnne and his officers now report every arrest that could jeopardize their department as a misdemeanor to keep those cases in Town Court, where there is no public defender to challenge the bail or adjournment.
The defendants are allowed to walk free after ninety days because, by then, dashcam footage from police cars is deleted unless it has been held or subpoenaed.
Terry and Summer face setbacks
Terry and Summer decide to steal the dashcam footage from the courthouse. The judge had informed them that the footage of Mike’s arrest could serve as evidence to sue the police department.
The two of them successfully steal the footage before Burnne’s men set fire to the storage area. While Terry gets out, Summer gets caught.
Terry then uses the footage to threaten Burnne’s men, who call him to Rebel Ridge. Knowing that he will face armed men there, Terry heads to the police station instead.
He steals seized weapons from the station and tells Burnne that he will surrender to the state police once they release Summer.
If they do not release her, he will leak the stolen footage. He assumes that Jessica is Serpico and hands her the footage along with a gun.
However, it is revealed that Jessica is not Serpico. She uses the gun to force Terry to surrender, leaving him unarmed and surrounded by Burnne’s men.
She also gives the footage to Steve, who destroys it, leaving Terry with no leverage to rescue Summer or expose Burnne’s corruption.
The beginning of Burnne’s downfall
Steve now wants to kill Terry, but Officer Marston intervenes, pointing his gun at Steve to stop him. This leads to Burnne shooting Marston.
In the chaos, Terry realizes that Marston is Serpico, and Jessica realizes that Burnne will sacrifice his officers to keep his crimes hidden.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Terry takes cover with Marston, who instructs him to turn on his police car’s lights to activate the dashcam.
Terry overpowers the officers loyal to Burnne while Jessica, now unwilling to support Burnne, prevents others from shooting at Terry and Marston.
The dashcam captures Burnne shooting at Marston’s car, providing Terry with the evidence he needs. Terry then escapes with the injured Marston and a drugged Summer.
As Burnne pursues them, Jessica reports the incident to the state police without manipulating the facts. Just when Terry, Marston, and Summer seem cornered, Jessica takes Burnne out.
The remaining officers, having turned against Burnne, escort the trio to the hospital. Once Terry ensures his companions receive the treatment they need, he retrieves the recorder from the car, securing the evidence against Burnne.
This time, Burnne will not escape the consequences of his actions, as his own officers have turned on him, and Terry has the footage of him shooting at Marston.
