Plot summary
After getting away with Neel’s murder, Rani cuts all ties with her family and moves to Agra to be with Rishu. However, there are still obstacles in the way of their union.
Rani and Rishu cannot be seen together, as everyone believes Rishu to be dead. They plan to move to Thailand, where they can start afresh and finally be together.
They live apart and work hard to obtain visas and fake passports. In the meantime, they attract new admirers in the city: Poonam and Abhimanyu.
Rishu repeatedly rejects the advances of his landlady, Poonam, while Rani unintentionally keeps standing up a compounder, Abhimanyu, who is madly in love with her.
Then, the life that Rishu and Rani have built for themselves in Agra is threatened when Rani runs into Inspector Kishore in Agra.
Kishore tells Rani that he read the Dinesh Pandit novel that Rani and Rishu used as inspiration to get away with Neel’s murder.
Rani panics when Kishore hints that he knows Rishu is alive and informs her that someone has been looking for her.
Rani and Rishu’s worst fears come true when the police start tailing Rani wherever she goes, making it difficult for her to meet or contact Rishu.
She is eventually called to the police station for questioning, where she learns that an officer named Mrutyunjay Paswan, better known as Montu, has taken over Rishu’s murder case. Montu happens to be Neel’s uncle.
Montu is determined to bring Rani and Rishu to justice, knowing that they killed Neel and staged it to look like Rishu was the one who died.
He has his subordinates keeping a constant watch on Rani, hoping that she will lead them to Rishu. His subordinates also actively search for Rishu.
They manage to arrest the travel agent Rishu had paid to get fake passports for their escape to Thailand, foiling Rishu and Rani’s escape plans.
The police even arrive at Poonam’s house in search of Rishu. Although Poonam lies about never having seen Rishu, she uses the fact that he is a wanted man to blackmail him.
Left with no other options, Rani decides to marry Abhimanyu to convince Montu that Rishu is dead and that she is moving on, even though Rishu strongly disagrees with her decision.
Rani makes it clear to Abhimanyu that theirs will be a marriage of convenience, but Abhimanyu remains hopeful that he will eventually be able to make her fall in love with him.
The stress of being investigated by the police, the guilt of betraying Abhimanyu, and her separation from Rishu lead Rani to get drunk and confess the truth to Abhimanyu.
Abhimanyu is angry and hurt but decides to help Rani and Rishu escape from Agra, much to their surprise. He even offers Rishu a hiding place.
However, not only does Poonam discover Rishu’s hiding place, but a man named Lallan does as well. After meeting Lallan, Rishu learns that Abhimanyu is not as benign as he appears.
Abhimanyu, also a fan of Dinesh Pandit’s crime novels, took inspiration from one of them to kill his uncle and his family for deceiving his father.
Abhimanyu now locks Rishu in a room and goes to meet Rani. Later that night, a terrified Rani runs to the police station, pleading for help.
She is forced to reveal to Montu that Rishu is alive and that Abhimanyu wants to kill both her and Rishu for deceiving him. The police then begin searching for Rishu and Abhimanyu.
Soon after, the charred remains of Poonam and Abhimanyu are found. Montu suspects Rani and Rishu of the murders, leading to Rani’s arrest.
Montu orders his subordinates to break the law and torture Rani in custody to force her to reveal Rishu’s hiding place. He also leaks news of her torture to the media, hoping that Rishu will surrender for her sake.
As expected, Rishu agrees to surrender, but with a condition: he demands that the police bring Rani to the railway bridge on a specified date and time and allow her to walk up to him alone.
Montu agrees, confident that Rishu will not be able to trick him. He plans to surround Rani and Rishu on the bridge and leave them with no escape.
Ending explained:
Montu’s discoveries
On the designated date and time, Rishu arrives at the railway bridge to surrender, and Montu sends Rani to him. Within seconds, the two are surrounded by the police.
However, an officer disobeys orders and approaches them. The officer turns out to be Abhimanyu; the charred remains previously found were actually those of Lallan and Poonam.
Lallan had been blackmailing Abhimanyu, so Abhimanyu killed him. He also killed Poonam because she had been blackmailing Rishu.
Now, Abhimanyu intends to kill Rani and Rishu to get his revenge. Before the police can reach them, a struggle ensues between the three of them.
The struggle causes them to fall from the bridge into the crocodile-infested river below. While the authorities search for their bodies, Montu continues investigating.
Montu realizes that Rani, Rishu, and Abhimanyu are the only ones who stand to benefit from their supposed deaths; Rani and Rishu would have gone to prison for Neel’s murder and Abhimanyu for the murder of his uncle’s family.
He finds CCTV footage proving that Rani, Rishu, and Abhimanyu had conspired together before Rani rushed to the police station and claimed that Abhimanyu was going to kill her and Rishu.
Montu suspects that falling into the river was part of their plan, but he is unable to investigate further because his superior orders him to close the case.
A scheme from a crime novel
Six months after Rani, Rishu, and Abhimanyu’s disappearance, Rani and Abhimanyu are seen living in Deosar, Himachal Pradesh. Rishu is presumed dead.
Rani is now working as a school teacher and trying to move on from Rishu’s death. One day, she receives a message revealing a truth she did not know.
Meanwhile, Montu receives a Dinesh Pandit novel in the mail, one of only three printed copies. The novel’s plot reveals the plan concocted by Rani, Rishu, and Abhimanyu.
Before falling into the river, Rishu and Abhimanyu had managed to drive the crocodiles away from the bridge by feeding them.
Rani was then sent to the police to report Abhimanyu, leading to her arrest and Rishu’s subsequent demands in exchange for his surrender.
Abhimanyu then appeared on the bridge, where the three of them staged a struggle and jumped into the water to fake their deaths.
They would have successfully gotten away if they had not unexpectedly encountered a crocodile, which led to Rishu’s death.
Is Rani dead or alive?
Rani is the one who sent the novel to Montu along with a message asking him to meet her at a cliff. She sends a similar message to Abhimanyu.
It turns out that Abhimanyu could have saved Rishu from the crocodile, but he chose to let him die because he wanted Rani to love him, something that would not have happened as long as Rishu was alive.
Rani calls Montu to the cliff because she has discovered the truth about Rishu’s death. She confronts Abhimanyu and, to punish him for his crimes, kills herself by jumping off the cliff.
Abhimanyu is then arrested by Montu, but Rani’s body is never found. It is then revealed that both Rani and Rishu are alive.
Rishu used his prosthetic arm to kill the crocodile and escape. He found Rani in Deosar and told her the truth about how Abhimanyu tried to kill him.
The two of them then devised a plan to make Montu believe that they were both dead and get Abhimanyu, who turns out to be Dinesh Pandit’s son, arrested.
After jumping off the cliff, Rani reunites with Rishu. The two have managed to outsmart the police once again and finally get to be safe together.
