Plot summary:

Wes Neal is sent to 6 months in military prison and gets a bad conduct discharge after getting caught illegal street racing.

He heads out to a small town where his estranged father, Dean Miller, races motorbikes professionally.

Wes asks if they could have a conversation and later says that he wants to get into professional racing as well.

Dean says that it isn’t that easy but agrees to see what he’s got. After riding with him and seeing him on the track a few times, Dean decides to train Wes.

Wes gets a job at the auto shop owned by Abel, the man who trained Dean. Wes also meets Camila at the local diner and asks her out.

She is also going to nursing school, although her dream was to be on Broadway before life got in the way.

They hit it off pretty quickly and she is there for his first amateur race. Wes wins it and goes out to celebrate with Dean but they get incredibly drunk.

He shows up for work late the next day and Abel warns him that he needs to be more careful with Dean.

Dean spends most of his time sleeping around and drinking and complaining about how he missed out on his peak because of injury.

He sees real talent in Wes and decides to move him to the 600 class because that is where the money is.

Wes finds out that Camila has a young son named Leo, but that doesn’t push him away and he immediately takes a liking to the boy.

Camila and Leo attend Wes’s first race in the 600 class, where his main rival is Cody Farrell, a rich kid with heavy financial backing.

Dean tells Wes to run Cody off the track because he doesn’t deserve to race. He also sees Camila as a threat to Wes’s career and mentions to her that Cody just got out of prison.

Wes almost finishes first but Cody runs him off the track and sends him down to fourth. Dean gets into a scrap with Cody’s team and Wes gets involved too.

He throws some punches on Cody right in front of Camila and Leo so she storms off. Abel tells Dean that he didn’t behave respectfully and ruined his shop’s name.

Dean says that Abel’s shop only got to where it was because of his efforts. Abel hits back at Dean, saying that he watched him throw away his career rather than come back from injury strong.

Dean tells Wes that they are leaving Abel and going out on their own. Wes isn’t very confident but goes along anyway.

Ending explained:

Bad decisions

Wes waits for Camila outside the diner and tries to talk to her but she asks him about his prison stint.

He tells her the truth and she says that she was terrified about him punching another man which is why she doesn’t think he should be with her and Leo.

Dean told Wes that Camila was only looking at Wes as a potential father for Leo and he repeats that to her.

She is insulted and leaves, with him doing the same. He goes back home and waits for Dean to get back so that they can talk.

Getting closure

Wes asks Dean about what happened between him and Wes’s mother. Dean explains that he was only 21 with ambitions so he couldn’t be tied down to a family.

He mentions how his father was a prizefighter who couldn’t make it to the big leagues because his mother forced him to give it up, which built up a lot of resentment.

They argue with each other and Dean punches Wes. Wes leaves and then burns his bike before getting taken in by the police.

Fulfilling his potential

Abel picks him up the next day and gives him a place to stay. He tells him about his own life spent racing and not having a family.

He lost his wife in a car accident while he was away for a race. His wife begged him to retire but he kept looking for one more race.

He was too afraid to be a father because he didn’t have one in his life either. Dean shows up to apologize for the same reasons.

Dean believed that Wes would have been better off without him because he didn’t know how to be a good father.

They make up with each other. Abel tells Wes that needs to race because he has talent so Wes attends the championship race.

Cody visits Camila and apologizes to her for keeping his prison stint a secret. He asks her to come to the race because he cannot imagine his future without her and Leo.

Dean decides to race in it as well because he is inspired by Wes. They go head to head for the top spot with Cody also staying close.

Dean hits Cody’s killswitch and takes him out, leaving him and Wes to compete for first. They reach the final stretch and Cody swerves to avoid Dean’s maneuver.

Dean wipes out while Wes wins the race. He goes to check if Dean is okay and then heads over to receive the adoration of the crowd, including Camila who shows up to support him.
