In Castlevania: Nocturne, the Abbot raises an army of night creatures to crush the French Revolution. However, not everything goes according to the plan.
The Abbot strongly opposes the French Revolution, as he believes that the revolution upends the natural order decreed by God. The Vampire Messiah, Erzsebet Bathory, also wants to put an end to the revolution, as it threatens the power of vampires as well.
The Abbot bribes a demon to give him a machine made in Hell. This machine gives the Abbot the power to forge night creatures from human corpses, provided to him by the vampires, his allies in this war.
Night creatures are demons. They are made by grafting human corpses onto souls from Hell. A very powerful Forgemaster is needed to make these creatures, and that is why Erzsebet needs the Abbot. In the world of Castlevania: Nocturne, night creatures have not been seen in centuries, and the Abbot becomes the first person to forge them again.
The flaws in the Abbot’s creation
Night creatures are quite strong and hard to defeat. They are not thinking and feeling human beings, so they follow the Forgemaster’s orders blindly, which makes them perfect soldiers.
Edouard is caught by vampires and turned into a night creature by the Abbot. However, the Abbot’s creation is flawed, as Edouard somehow retains his humanity. When he is sent to attack Annette and her friends, Edouard takes one look at Annette and ends up protecting her.
Edouard’s disobedience leads to him getting imprisoned by the Abbot, who is yet to figure out what went wrong with the process. Edouard also remembers bits and pieces from when he was human. He has not lost his human soul and can even sing the way he used to do as a human.
His singing leaves an impact on the other night creatures as well. Jacques, who was a revolutionary before he was killed and turned into a night creature, is reminded of his humanity when he hears Edouard’s song and talks to him.
Jacques and the other night creature who stands guard over Edouard end up disobeying their orders. They turn against other night creatures and side with Annette. Edouard decides to not leave with Annette, as his songs bring light to others like him.
The Abbot’s creation turns out to be far from perfect. By the end of the first season, most of his night creatures are killed by Richter and his group. Out of the ones that are not killed, there are some who are more human and demon.
