Does Navarro die in True Detective: Night Country?

A lot of mystery surrounds the fate of Trooper Evangeline Navarro in the finale of True Detective: Night Country.

When the sun dawns upon Ennis again, Liz is interviewed about the Tsalal men’s case, Hank, Otis, and Clark, as well as what happened to Trooper Navarro.

Navarro leaves behind Holden’s toy and Clark’s confession against Silver Sky Mining for Liz, whereas she has returned Qavvik’s toothbrush to him.

Navarro is seen walking into the ice. Liz claims that she has no theories about what happened to Trooper Navarro. She doesn’t think anyone will find Navarro on the ice.

However, reports suggest people have seen her. To that, Liz responds by saying that this is Ennis; nobody ever really leaves.

Is Navarro dead or alive?

True Detective: Night Country has left Navarro’s fate open to discussion for the viewers. Earlier in the finale, during their time at Tsalal, Navarro discussed with Liz that there is something out there calling her.

Throughout the season, Navarro experiences supernatural occurrences, such as traveling to another realm and seeing ghosts of people.

Navarro’s sister, Julia, too, saw ghosts before meeting her end. Navarro claims there is more to this and expresses that it can be a comfort to follow these voices she hears.

Traveling into this very realm also helps Navarro find her Inupiaq name. Liz discourages Navarro from following any of this.

However, after seeing Holden trapped under the ice and almost dying trying to save him, Liz accepts Navarro’s perspective and decision; Navarro may have really met Holden.

Liz asks Navarro to try and come back if she follows whatever is calling her. The way Navarro walks into the ice is exactly how Julia did and killed herself.

Whether Navarro enters another realm or kills herself remains a mystery. Even one of the final scenes in which she visits Liz doesn’t confirm whether it’s her or just her spirit.
