In the finale of Invasion season 2, Mitsuki is able to open a portal to the alien mothership, but not without making a huge sacrifice.
In the second season of Invasion, Nikhil Kapur brings Mitsuki to the alien ship that was shot down by the humans. While the world’s best minds failed to communicate with the alien entity there, Mitsuki succeeds in one go.
Discovery of the portal
With time, Mitsuki discovers the entity’s secrets, including its cloaking signal. She even tries to learn the language of the aliens, but not without paying the price. Every scientist who went to communicate with the entity before Mitsuki suffered memory loss and neurological damage.
Mitsuki is not immune to the entity’s effect. The frequent contact takes a toll on her mind, and she starts losing her memories. Maya notices Mitsuki’s condition and tries to convince Nikhil to not send Mitsuki to the entity before she recovers.
Maya buys Mitsuki some time by disabling her suits. An impatient Nikhil then goes to the entity’s room on his own and destabilizes it, which leads to Mitsuki destroying the entity. It is only then that Mitsuki realizes that it was a portal that could have led them to the world of the aliens.

Mitsuki loses herself
Caspar has been to the alien mothership and has met Mitsuki there. He saw a light there, and he believes that destroying that light would cause harm to all the aliens, as they are all connected to the mothership.
The WDC decides to send a team of soldiers to the mothership to aid Caspar. However, they need a portal. There is a portal in Idabel, which the aliens use to abduct and return humans, but no one can see it.
As Mitsuki is the only one who has succeeded in making contact with an alien entity, she is tasked with making the portal in Idabel visible and keeping it open long enough for the team of soldiers to pass.
When the time comes, Mitsuki tries to find and make the portal visible. To keep Mitsuki grounded, Maya talks to her about their good memories. While Mitsuki makes the portal visible, she struggles to keep it stable.

Mitsuki realizes that she will have to surrender her mind to the aliens; she needs to be like them to control the portal. Mitsuki asks Maya to let her go, and Maya reluctantly agrees, knowing that this is their only chance to gain an advantage in the war against the invaders.
Maya stops trying to make Mitsuki hold onto her humanity, and Mitsuki becomes part of the alien consciousness. Mitsuki sacrifices her own mind to access the aliens’ mind and stabilizes the portal. It is only because of her sacrifice that Trevante is able to reach the mothership.
