Miguel Estévez: Fake Profile character explained

Miguel Estévez serves as one of the primary protagonists in Netflix’s Fake Profile, with his actions affecting people around him and the story at large in a drastic fashion.

Miguel Estévez comes across as a fraudster at the start of Fake Profile, and as the story progresses he shows capabilities to be an empathetic individual who’s also contending with his share of struggles.

However, in spite of contributing to his family falling apart, he continues to give in to his sexual urges and cheat on his wife.

Meanwhile, he also goes up against his wealthy and powerful father-in-law, in the company of which he’s always felt smaller and unworthy, contributing to many of his shortcomings.

Serial adulterer

Miguel Estévez has a wife and two children who all seem to be happy individuals and the family dynamic seems healthy. However, behind the curtains, an infection festers that affects most of the family.

Miguel cheats on his wife and Camila isn’t the first woman he’s cheated on Ángela with. Before her, it was another resident of House G, named Ximena Santos. She even left her child and husband to start a life with the serial cheater but he grew cold feet and refused to leave his family or the fortune that comes with it.

And even before Ximena Santos, he’d have extramarital sex and affairs with other girls during business trips and such. Even after his affair with Camila is exposed, he continues to hook up with her.

Failing family man

As a result of his cheating tendencies, he has a fractured relationship with his wife Ángela, who allows herself to sleep around with another man after finding out about her husband.

What’s more, is that his son Lucas knows about his affairs and that he cheated on his mother with Ximena Santos in the past. When he cheats with Camila, Lucas witnesses it via the security cameras he installs inside her room to spy on her and record them red-handed.

As a result of this discovery, Lucas self-harms due to the mental stress of it all. He then becomes obsessed with driving his father out of the family and gets his mother to divorce him. He even ends up harming Camila badly at one point.

When Ángela can’t have any more of it, she decides to divorce him. However, Miguel remains steadfast in making efforts for his children, which fails when it comes to Lucas but the younger Eva needs her father.

In the midst of all this drama, it’s the children who suffer the most, and bear witness to a number of what would only count in the future as traumatic childhood memories.

Why does he use fake profiles?

He goes on different dating apps and used different profiles for each app. He used fake profiles to hook up with women. The one he uses in the case of Camila is that of a plastic surgeon called Dr. Fernando Castell.

When Camila meets Castell in Cartagena, she learns he’s a different man altogether. Later in the show, Ángela learns about his fake profiles and meets Dr. Castell, informing him how his profile is being used by someone else to fraud others.

Castell presses charges and Miguel is arrested. During questioning, he confesses that he used Fernando Castell’s name and image because of his own insecurities that came about by working in the presence of his wife and father-in-law.

He confesses that he hated his life and who he was, he hated waking up and no matter what he did, never being able to make his wife or father-in-law happy.

Using Castell’s identity on Tinder was his only way of escaping that, to feel the respect and admiration of others who think he’s a revered plastic surgeon, instead of an engineer who no one in his family appreciates.
