Maya Lopez’s abilities in Marvel’s Echo explained

Maya Lopez has certain abilities that come to her aid in times of need in Marvel’s Echo.

Maya Lopez belongs to a long line of Choctaw women who had extraordinary abilities that they used to help their kind.

The original Choctaw people lived in a cave underground and drank from a sacred pool of water.

When the cave collapsed, Chafa, their leader saved them as they ascended to Earth. Maya often gets visions of her ancestors even when she’s awake, and Chula explains their significance.

Watching over their own

Chula tells Maya that the visions she is seeing, are of their ancestors. She describes it as an ‘echo’ of generations that are reaching out to her.

When she sees her mother Taloa, she is reminded of the gifts she got from the women who came before her.

Chafa was a fierce leader who led her people through a new and unknown land. She passed down that ferocity.

Lowak secured her tribe’s future in a game of will and strategy, and she passed down those qualities.

Tuklo went against her father’s orders and trained to be a light horseman, and she passed down that cunning to Maya.

And finally, love, which was personified by Taloa who could heal everyone around her. Maya draws on her ancestors’ powers, and it isn’t confined to her either.

She shares with Chula and Bonnie too, who come from the same bloodline.

In the comics

Maya’s origin and her abilities are considerably different from her character in the comics.

The comic version of Echo possessed photographic reflexes and could mimic the skills of anyone that she observed, similar to the abilities of the Taskmaster.

Executive producer Sydney Freeland wasn’t too keen on her original powers, which is why they veered in a different direction.

It is still unclear what nature the powers are of or the range of her capabilities, but it is tied to her heritage and will most likely play a huge part in the future.
